App Digest: Hungama Music & Video, TaxiForSure.com, Paytm

Digital entertainment business Hungama.com has updated its music and video streaming mobile app on Android and iOS. The updated version now includes adaptive streaming for audio and video and Airplay support on iOS. The new app also compatible with the iPhone 5 screen. Besides this, the app has also integrated Google Wallet support on Android allowing users to buy music from within the app.

The company claims that the app detects the network and adjusts the sound quality on the basis of bandwidth available. One just needs to change the sound quality to  ‘auto’ mode under ‘Settings’ under MY PLAY. Hungama claims that the app will work seamlessly on 2G, 3G and WiFi network, however, when I tried the app on Edge network, it was unbearably slow.

The iOS app’s Airplay support will allow users to stream their music and videos via Apple TV in both audio &video players. Users just need to switch on AirPlay from Music>full player>settings & videos. We are not in a position to test this feature.

Launched in March 2013, the app features music and videos from various genres like Bollywood, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Punjabi, Devotional, Regional music and International music among others. The app is available for download on iOSAndroid and BlackBerry 10 platforms.

Online taxi booking site TaxiForSure.com has launched its mobile app on smartphone platforms such as Android and iOS.

We tried the app on our Android handset, Micromax A90S. The app detects one’s location and maps it on Google Maps within the app. One can edit the location by clicking on the edit button besides the address detected. Once the address is settled, one can choose between a point-to-point pick up and airport drop or pickup. For instant booking, one can just click on pick now and for advance booking one can click on pick later. For Airport, one needs to specify whether it’s a pick from the airport or a drop and then confirm the timing of the pick up and drop.

It then provides you with taxi type options and fixed and per kilometer fare. The rates vary as per the type of taxi. When we checked it offered Tata Indica non-AC, Tata Indica AC, and Sedan.

The app also provides price chart for the type of car with minimum kilometer, minimum fare, and per kilometer charge. It lists the prices for night time and day time for point to point and airport bookings.

Note that Taxiforsure, launched in 2011 is only available in Delhi and Bangalore. In June 2013, it had raised first round of funding from its existing seed investors, Accel PartnersHelion Venture Partners and Blume Ventures. Prior to this, in May 2012, the company had raised undisclosed amount of venture capital funding from Accel Partners, Helion Venture Partners and Blume Ventures. Following the transaction, Anand Daniel of Accel and Ritesh Banglani of Helion had joined the board of the company.

One97 Communications incubated, online payments site, Paytm has launched its mobile application on Windows Phones and the Nokia Asha Touch phones. The app can be downloaded from Windows Phone Store and Nokia Ovi Store.

Paytm app allows one to recharge Mobile, DTH, 3G data and utility services. In December 2012, the company had added bus ticketing service on its platform. In August 2012, it had added recharges for toll cards in its catalog.

Besides the newly launched Windows Phone and Nokia Asha Touch phones, Paytm app is available on Android, iOS, and BlackBerry. It also has a mobile site at m.paytm.com.
