Updated: Amar Ujala Launches Deals Site & Mobile Apps

amarujala logoNorth India’s Hindi news daily, Amar Ujala, has launched best deals app for local merchants and customers in Agra. The deals can be accessed through their website deals.amarujala.com or through their Android app available for download from the Google Play Store. It appears that the company has partnered with Uahoy for the deals and discounts.

While the press release says that app is available on Smartphone platforms such as  Android, Apple’s iOS, Blackberry, Windows (phone), and Java, when we checked the app was available only on Android operating system. Update: The Amar Ujala deals app is available on Apple’s iOS, Windows Phone, Android and J2ME phones.

The platform allows merchants to offer deals on food & beverages, beauty & spa, entertainment, electronics, automobile, nightlife, gifts, among others. While registering on the deal site, the website asked us the city we would like to get deals from, however, while using the app the deals platform doesn’t seem to display deals from the area we selected on the app. It appears that while the website only lists deals in Agra, it plans to expand its operations to other cities such as Amritsar, Bangalore, Mumbai, Pune, Kolkata, Gurgaon, among others. Update: Amar Ujala has informed MediaNama that if the city has deals, it will get displayed as the first choice; followed by other deals across other cities.

The platform provides deal details, that is, percentage discount, location of the shop that’s offering a deal, and time left to avail the deal. Interestingly, the website doesn’t send any email or SMS about the deal one has selected. Instead, it just lists the deal code in text, bar code, and QR code formats. Another thing that irked us that the website doesn’t allow one to locate all the deals they’ve acquired in a single location. If one has to locate the deal, they have to go back to the website and search for the deal, which becomes even more cumbersome since the website doesn’t send any email notification.

Monetization: It appears that the website is currently monetizing through advertising. We noticed two ad space on its homepage. Its mobile app as well features a display ad on the bottom of the app screen.

Like other deals site, the deals available on Amar Ujala are also heavily dominated in the spa and beverages category. This market seems to be tried and dusted by everyone other deal sites. We feel that if Amar Ujala needs to differentiate from other players in deal segment, it needs to bring in deals in other categories as well.

All the deals on the Amar Ujala deals platform are free for the customers. It appears that all deals platform seems to be taking a cue from Times Internet’s TimesDeal platform. Last year in October 2012, TimesDeal* made all the deals free on its website after a promo code leak. Prior to that, TimesDeal, charged a part of the deal cost as a booking amount.

Other deals site include Snapdeal which is now an E-commerce marketplace yet offers deals on spa and healthcare sections, Groupon India, Deals and You, and Mydala. Homeshop18.com also offers flash deals on particular products every month.
