M.F. Farooqui has been appointed Telecom Secretary, taking over from R.Chandrasekhar who has now retired. Prior to this appointment, Farooqui was Secretary, Department of Heavy Industry, before which he was special Secretary in the Ministry of Environment and Forests. He has also been the Principal Secretary, Government of Tamil Nadu in the Industries Department, and Joint Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs, Union Ministry of Finance. He is a post-graduate in Physics as well as a post-graduate in Business Administration.
He joins at a time when the Telecom Sector is in turmoil, with the government unable to generate much revenue from auctions, uncertainty over the future of many telecom licencees whose licenses were cancelled by the Supreme Court, auctions to plan and conduct, spectrum refarming issues to address, the Vodafone tax stand-off, BSNL’s declining fortunes, the 2G Scam Court Case, among many other things.
