Updated: Apple Q2-FY13: 37.4M iPhones & 19.5M iPads Sold; $43.6B Revenue

April 24, 2013: Apple has reported total revenues of $43.6 billion for the quarter ending March 31, 2012, up 11% from $39.2 billion revenues in the same quarter last year.

The company has posted a net profit of $9.5 billion for the quarter, a 18.1% decline from $11.6 billion profit reported in the same quarter last year.

Device Sales: iPhone and iPad Increases while iPod and Mac Continues To Decline

iPhone: Apple has sold 37.4 million iPhones during the quarter, up 7% from 35.1 million iPhone sales in Q2-FY12. The company had reported 47.8 million iPhone sales in the previous quarter, however do note that the previous quarter was a holiday quarter. iPhone sales accounted for $22.96 billion (52.66%) revenue of total Apple revenues for the quarter.

iPad: Apple has sold 19.5 million iPads during the quarter, up 65% from 11.9 million iPad sales in Q2-FY12. The company had reported 22.9 million iPad sales in the previous quarter, which was a holiday quarter. Note that this includes sales from both regular iPad and iPad Mini and the company hasn’t provided any breakup for the same. iPad sales accounted for $8.75 billion (20.1%) revenue of total Apple revenues for the quarter.

Macs: Apple has sold 3.95 million Macs during the quarter, a 2% decline from 4.02 million Mac sales in Q2-FY12. The company had generated 4.1 million Mac sales in the previous quarter. Mac sales accounted for $5.45 billion (12.5%) revenue of total Apple revenues for the quarter.

iPod: Apple has sold 5.6 million iPods during the quarter, a 27% decline from 7.67 million iPod sales in Q2-FY12. The company had reported 12.7 million iPod sales in the previous quarter. iPod sales accounted for $962 (2.21%) million revenue of total Apple revenues for the quarter.

Software Sales

Apple has generated $4.11 billion revenues from software sales for the quarter, up 30% from $3.17 billion revenue in Q2-FY12 and up 12% from $3.69 billion revenue in the previous quarter. Software sales revenue includes revenues from sales on the iTunes Store, the App Store, the Mac App Store, and the iBookstore, and revenue from sales of AppleCare, licensing and other services. The segment accounted for 9.43% of total Apple revenues for the quarter.


Apple has reported $1.38 billion revenue from accessories for the quarter, up from $1.2 billion revenue in Q2-FY12. The company had reported $1.83 billion revenue in the previous quarter. This includes revenues from sales of hardware peripherals and Apple-branded and third-party accessories for iPhone, iPad, Mac and iPod. The segment accounted for 3.17% of total Apple revenues for the quarter.

APAC Revenues: APAC region accounted for $3.16 billion (7.25%) revenue of total Apple revenues for the quarter. Note that this revenue doesn’t include revenues from Greater China (China, Hong Kong and Taiwan) and Japan region.

Need To Know

– International sales accounted for 66% of the quarter’s revenue, up from 61% in the previous quarter and 64% in the same quarter last year.

– For the forthcoming quarter, Apple has given a guidance of $33.5 billion – $35.5 billion revenue.

On Software: Apple’s app store is now available in 155 countries and its iTunes music store is available in 119 countries offering a combined catalog of 35 million songs. It sells movies in 109 countries offering 60,000 titles, and iBookstores in 155 countries offering 1.75 million iBooks for sale. iCloud, which was launched 18 months ago, now has 300 million active users everyday.

Apple reported that its developers created more than 850,000 iOS apps, including 350,000 apps made for iPad. Peter Oppenheimer – Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, informed that cumulative app downloads surpassed 45 billion and app developers made over $9 billion for their sales through the App Store, including $4.5 billion in the most recent four quarters alone. 

On enterprise: Apple reported that about 30,000 companies have developed and distributed iOS apps for corporate use by their employees. GlaxoSmithKline developed more than 50 in-house iOS apps to support iPhones and iPads connecting to its corporate network. Companies such as AXA, Nordstrom’s, Eaton Corporation, and Takeda Pharmaceuticals are supporting iPhones.

In Education Sector: In the education sector, Grupo Santillana has developed UNO Internacional and integrated educational system that uses iPads to create digital learning environment in more than 700 private K-12 schools in Latin America. UNO Internacional deployed more than 60,000 iPads to schools in Mexico, Colombia, and Brazil including 17,000 iPads for teachers and students in Brazil in the March quarter.

Apple retail stores: Apple reported $5.2 billion in revenues from its Apple retail stores compared to $4.4 billion in the year ago quarter, an increase of 19%. Oppenheimer said that the growth was due to strong sales of iPhone and iPad. Apple now has a total of 402 retail stores including 151 stores outside the US. It plans to open 30 new stores in the 2013 fiscal year.

On bigger iPhone: Cook continues to support iPhone’s current screen size stating that iPhone 5 has the best display in the industry. He also said that some customers value large screen size, others value also other factors such as resolution, color quality, white balance, brightness, reflectivity, screen longevity, power consumption, portability, compatibility with apps, among others. Apple’s competitors  according to him, made significant trade-offs in many of these areas in order to ship a larger display and that Apple would not ship a larger display iPhone while these trade-offs exist.
