Paytm and redBus Launch Real-Time Bus Tracking Feature

One97 Communications incubated online payments site Paytm and online bus booking site redBus.in have introduced real-time bus tracking on its respective bus booking services, allowing their customers to track buses in real time.

This feature will allow travelers booking their bus tickets through these sites will be able to track the estimated arrival time of the buses at the boarding point. However, its worth noting that this feature will be available only on buses whose operators have installed a GPS tracker. It appears that both these service providers have launched this feature to inform travelers about any delay in the bus arrival at the boarding points due to traffic.

Live Bus Tracking On redBus:

redBus has launched this feature in partnership with YourBus and Asset Tracker who provide in-bus GPS tracking solution. Redbus claims that this feature will be to be available over 600 buses operated by Orange Travels, SVR Travels, Morning Star, Kaveri Travels, Sree travels, Navin Travels.

How does it work?

While we were not able to try the feature on the portal or its Android app, the company said that passengers will be able to make use of this new feature on buses marked with Live tracking on redBus. It said that around 30 minutes before the bus journey starts, they will send a SMS to the passengers with the registration number of the bus along with a link that will allow passengers to track their bus on Google Maps service. Passengers who have installed redBus Android app, will be getting a similar notification on their mobile phones, 30 minutes prior to the journey and users will be able track the exact location of bus based on the GPS updates within the app.

Real Time Bus Tracking On Paytm:

Competing with redBus, Paytm which had introduced bus ticketing in December 2012, has also launched a similar feature by partnering with YourBus.

However, unlike the redBus service, Paytm said that the real-time tracking will be available only on large bus operators in South India like Morning Star Travels, Orange Tours & Travels, SVR Tours & Travels, Navin Travels, Sree Travels and Kaveri Kamkshi Travels and the company hopes to have more than 1000 buses with real-time GPS in the next couple of months.

How does it work?

While we weren’t able to try it on Paytm website, the company said that commuters will be able to track their buses if they have booked tickets on a bus with GPS real-time tracker installed. It mentioned that passengers will receive a SMS with details of the current bus location and the estimated bus arrival time at the boarding point, about an hour before the boarding time. Paytm also offers iOS and Android apps, but it currently doesn’t offer bus ticketing functionality.
