42.03 Lakh subscribers submitted number porting requests in the month of January 2013, according to the Indian Telecom regulator, TRAI. This is up from 29.35 lakh porting requests reported for December 2012, a increase of 43.21% month on month. However, this also means that only 4.20 million connections out of India’s out of a total connection base of 862.62 million connections (708.04 million active), sent port-out requests during the month. We expect that reports for February will indicate higher porting requests, particularly for Uninor, which was asked to shut operations in Mumbai. In March, though, the TRAI asked Telcos to stop accepting MNP Requests from users of suspended telecom operators For the month of January, the maximum number of requests in Zone-I(North and West India) were received in Gujarat at 4 lakh. Jammu & Kashmir registered the lowest number of requests at 2534 but that is expected, since it has one of the lowest user base. In Zone-II(South and East India), West Bengal leads, with 8 lakh customers requesting for number porting till date, followed by Kolkata, which received 4 lakh requests. There were just 6536 requests from the North East circle. Note that TRAI has not provided operator wise information.
