Aircel Launches Music Download Service At Rs 5/Day

Mobile operator, Aircel, has launched a new service called ‘Pocket Music International’ where it offers its subscribers full music track downloads.

How to access: Aircel users can visit the WAP portal music.pocketinternet.in on their mobile handset and download full songs. The service is available on a daily subscription of Rs. 5 in which the user gets 5 song downloads daily, which translates to Re 1 per song. It’s unclear whether a user can download more than 5 songs a day for an extra charge. We have contacted Aircel for a clarification.

Content: Aircel has partnered with two global music recording labels – Sony and Universal. The catalog includes international artists like, Justin Bieber, Rihanna, Beyonce, Michael Jackson, Enrique Iglesias, Bryan Adams, Pitbull, Black Eyed Peas, Jennifer Lopez, among others. The tracks are DRM free and hence can be transferred to any devices. We have contacted Aircel for a clarification along with the information on the bitrate of the songs downloaded. We will update the post once we receive a response.

Previously, Aircel had launched Aircel Music Cloud, a service that allows users to stream unlimited music along with couple of music downloads. It offered  monthly, fortnightly & weekly packs for Rs 30, Rs 20 and Rs 10 respectively that offered unlimited music streaming. It also offered 5 free song downloads with the monthly pack, 3 free downloads with the fortnightly pack and 1 free song download with the weekly pack.

Other Players: Recently, Apple launched its iTunes service in the Indian market. Users in India can now buy and download local and international music and music videos, and rent or purchase films (HD films included) from the store. On the iTunes store individual songs are available for Rs 9- Rs 15, album prices differ depending on the number of songs and label.

Flipkart had also launched its digital downloads store, Flyte that offers music in MP3 format. The store offers DRM free music tracks starting at Rs 6-15 with multi device playback support in various bitrates including 64kbps, 128kbps, 320kbps.

Nokia also offers DRM-free music through it’s Nokia Music service in India, and features a good amount of international music, as well. However, Nokia’s service is subscription based and does not allow users to buy individual items. It only offers an ‘all you can eat’ subscription to buyers of new Nokia phones, who can renew their service after it expires. Note that Nokia also offers operator billing on its Nokia Store on Vodafone, Airtel and Reliance Communications. Hungama also offers music downloads, with different subscription plans (unlimited plans offer DRM-locked music) on offer.
