Game4U Launches Digital Game Downloads Service Downloads4U

Game4U, an online and physical retailer of gaming hardware and software operated by Milestone Interactive, has announced a digital download service for PC gamers in India – under the “Downloads4u” category on its portal www.game4u.com. The service provides users with a platform wherein they can download games on their PCs from a catalog of more than 300 game titles.

The company claims that it offers PC games at price points ranging between Rs. 99 to Rs. 2499 and provides local payment options including credit/debit card, net banking, cheque/demand draft and Cash on Delivery (COD). Launched as a public beta, the company claims that its downloads4U section already includes more than 1,000 game titles from publishers such as  Electronic Arts and SEGA along with titles from independent publishers.

Customers can search for a game title and download the game from the website. Alternatively users can also browse from categories of games — action, adventure, arcade, among others. The website provides a summary, product details, system requirements for the game, and reviews & ratings for games, while users make a purchase.

Other Players

While there aren’t any other websites that offer games for download as and when they release, that we know of, E-Commerce portals such as Flipkart, Indiaplaza, Infibeam, among others offer DVDs of game titles for PCs, Sony’s Playstation and Xbox. Sites like Flipkart, Indiaplaza, and Infibeam might not be able to provide new games as they launch, as it takes about 1-2 weeks for game titles to appear on those sites coupled with 4-5 days of delivery time. At a time when computer makers are shipping devices without optical drives and even operating systems are being seeded digitally, it makes sense to switch to a digital model for PC games.
