Reado, an audiobooks brand, has launched its online store at www.reado.com. The audio books are available on CDs as well as in mp3 format and can be played on most handheld devices.
Reado has partnered with publishing houses like Penguin Books India, Hachette, Harvard Business Review Press, Roli Publications, Brilliance Audio, Gildan Media, Audible.com, Samsung and Simon & Schuster.
Currently, Reado offers more than 150 classics, contemporary fiction & non-fiction titles in the audiobooks format on subjects such as Marketing, Business, Self Help, Adventure and Children. Apart from that, it also includes titles such as Kamasutra by Vatsayana, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (all parts) by Arthur Connan Doyle, Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carol, The Immortals of Meluha by Amish Tripathi, Losing My Virginity and Other Dumb Ideas by Rashmi Bansal, Get Into Bed with Google by John Smith, God Save the Dork by Sidin Vadukut, Road To Riches by Nepolean Hill amongst others. With upcoming titles such as MBA @ 16 by Subroto Bagchi, Ambani & Sonsby Hamish McDonald and The Perfect World by Priya Kumar.
Users can sign up on the eStore with their email address and password which is a two step process. As a promotional offer, Reado is currently offering new signups with Rs 100 of free Reado Cash which can be utilized to purchase an audio book. Users can search book based on categories such as Fiction, Sports, Business, among others. Apart from that users can also search books from their authors.
We tried their search bar but didn’t find it intelligent enough to return “The First 90 Days” by Michael Watkin when we searched for The First Ninety Days keyword. The portal also provides a 1-minute audio preview of the audio book. Audio books are available in digitally downloadable format and Audio CDs, however, Audio CDs are slightly costlier than the digital downloads.
Reado claims that it uses ‘mp3 enhance’, a compressed format technology which compresses one hour’s content into 6-7 MB space, as reported by The Hindu.
The eStore sports two ways for the payment checkout — a Wallet system and generic payment. It accepts credit/debit card, net banking and cash cards as modes of payment. The portal offers extra reward points to use its ‘readocash’, a closed wallet.
Competition; Same Books Cheaper on Flipkart
What’s interesting is that Flipkart provides audio books supplied by Reado on a discounted price, so prices are lower on Flipkart compared to Reado’s eStore. The audio book, The first 90 days, in MP3 format is available for Rs 384 on Flipkart while the same book is available on Reado for Rs. 499.
Apart from that, it also competes with Amazon’s Audible. The cost of a single book on Audible seems high as compared to Reado or Flipkart. Audible provides yearly and monthly subscription plans that allow users to read multiple books when one subscribes to the plan, however, even after the subscription the cost of an audio book turns out to be costlier than its Indian counterparts.
Founded in 2010, Reado has its studios in Delhi and Mumbai. It currently retails its audio books to 200 stores across India which includes online retailing through Flipkart.com and offline books stores like Crossword, Landmark, Reliance Time Out, Om Book Shop, Media Mart and WHSmith.
