IRS Q1 2012: Media Consumption On Internet Grows; Print Declines For Key Publications

According to Indian Readership Survey (IRS), a survey conducted by Hansa Research for Media Research Users Council (MRUC), media consumption on the Internet platform in India has touched 3.75 crores, up from 3.44 crore (pdf) in the previous quarter and 3.08 crore in a quarter before, and a significant 47% CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) during the period Q3 2011-Q1 2012.

The media consumption on the Cable & Satellite platform stood at 47.51 crore, up from 46.23 crore in the previous quarter, and recording 12.4% CAGR during the period Q3 2011- Q1 2012, while the media consumption on the radio platform stood at 15.49 crore, down from 15.67 crore in the previous quarter and a negative 4.2 CAGR. The total media consumption stood at 64.04 crore, up from 63.63 crore in the previous quarter and 3.2% CAGR during the period Q3 2011-Q1 2012.

Decline in print readership for several publications: While the media consumption through the print platform stood at 35.2 crore, marginally up from 35.03 crore in the previous quarter and 1.3% CAGR during the period Q3 2011-Q1 2012, seven out of the top ten print publications registered a decline in readership while the remaining three publications showed a marginal growth.

Those that reported a quarter on quarter decline include: Dainik Bhaskar, Malyalam Manorama, Amar Ujala, Lokmat, Daily Thanti, Rajasthan Patrika and Mathrubhumi

Those that reported a quarter on quarter growth include: Dainik Jagran, Hindustan, The Times of India
