Reliance Communications has appointed Gurdeep Singh as President & CEO of its Wireless Business, and a member of the Reliance Management Board. Singh fills the position left vacant after Syed Safawi left the organization, reportedly unwilling to renew his contract. Strangely, Reliance Communications had reportedly said then that a COO will run the wireless business.

Singh joins from Aircel, where he was Chief Operating Officer, at a time when the telecom market is in a state of flux, but also at a time when Reliance Communications has shown some signs of recovery: in results announced just a couple of days ago, RCOM’s wireless unit reported that its revenues grew 4.3% sequentially and EBITDA was up 13%. RCOM is focusing on growing its minutes of use and, more importantly, broad-basing the growth in data services.
