Opera: Unique Users Increase 2% During Weekends In India; Pageviews Up 5.6%

Opera Software, the browser company, which brings out its State of the Mobile Web report tracking country-wise mobile browsing trends on the basis of Opera Mini (its mobile browser) usage, has compared average number of unique users, page views and amount of data transferred during weekdays with weekends. Interestingly, all the three variables witnessed an increase during weekends, in the Indian market. The data used was from November 2011 since December being a holiday month exhibits a seasonal effect.

– Shift in terms of unique users – Interestingly, India was among the 17 countries where the average number of unique users browsing the web on their phones during weekend, were more than the number of unique users who browse during week days. India was seventh, following Egypt, Iran, Ghana, Ethiopia, Tanzania and Brunei with a 2% increase in unique mobile web users during weekends. This is completely in contrast to desktop usage, which we believe would be opposite. Romania, Belarus, Moldova, the United States and Poland had the biggest drops in users on weekend days. However, note that US has a high smartphone penetration, which could be another reason, since Opera Mini is majorly used by Feature phone users.

–  Shift in terms of page views – India was also part of the group of 30 countries where mobile page views witnessed an increase during the weekend, holding the ninth place with a 5.6% increase over average page views recorded during week days. Georgia, Czech Republic, Egypt, Tanzania and Turkey had the biggest gains in page views on weekend days, while, Hong Kong, Argentina, Belarus, Brazil and the Philippines had the biggest drops.

– In terms of data transferred – India also figures in the list of countries where more data was transferred during the weekend, along with 35 others. Georgia, Ghana, Armenia, Poland and Thailand had the biggest gains in data transferred on weekend days, while, Argentina, Belarus, Saudia Arabia, the United States and Ukraine had the biggest drops.

– Opera Mini Users – According to the company, 159 million people used Opera Mini in January 2012, 108.7 billion pages were served and 12.24 petabytes of operator data were compressed for Opera Mini users. Opera Mini users viewed over 108.7 billion pages in January 2012, according to the report.
