VuClip, a mobile video search and delivery startup has launched a mobile movie portal, ‘Starlight Cinema’ which it says will offer more than 9000 movie clips in 13 Indian languages including Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Bhojpuri, Gujarati, Punjabi, Oriya, Rajasthani, Kashmiri, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. Starlight Cinema will offer users shortened feature films, movie clips, songs reviews and trailers from films on low-end feature phones as well as smart phones, through mobile web, without requiring a separate app.
Content tie-ups: According to the company, it has tied up with providers such as UTV Motion Pictures, Reliance Entertainment, Vega, Whacked Out Media and MAA TV to offer content on the portal. The company claims that it will offer clips, trailers and first looks from upcoming movies like Barfee, Agneepath, Rowdy Rathore, Ladies Vs. Ricky Bahl, as well as others such as Rajneeti, Guzaarish, Once Upon a time in Mumbaai, 7 Khoon Maaf, I Hate Luv Storys, Sarkar, Family, Tees Maar Khan, and Thank You. It will also feature trailers of latest Hollywood movies .
In its pilot stage, the site claims to have registered 2 million visitors and generated over 11 million video views in a span of 100 days. It is working with content partners to digitize movie clips from as many as 8,500 movies. According to Salman Hussain, VP- Business Development & MD, India & Middle-East, VuClip wants to partner movie based content producers and aggregators to help them better distribute and monetize their content in an off-deck environment.
Regional content: VuClip also intends to offer mobile micro-sites for the various regional languages, beginning initially with one channel exclusively featuring South Indian movie clips including Telugu movies such as Dookudu, Oosaravelli, Dhada, Mr Perfect, Ye Maya Chesave as well as upcoming movies Panjaa and Sri Rama Rajyam;Tamil movies such as 7 Aum Arivu and upcoming movies Poraali, Osthe, Mayakkam Enna; besides movie clips in Kannada and Malayalam.
Experience: Although the company indicates that it monetizes through advertising, we did not find any ads on the movie website. Also, at the time of writing this post, we found that the site offered movie clips from 2-3 Hindi Movies, Hindi, Bhojpuri and Bengali songs, in addition to trailers. The clips get downloaded to the phone and are not streamed. The site allows users to share videos on social network. There is a search feature integrated, as well.
Earlier this year, the company had raised $8 million in its Series C round of funding, from New Enterprise Associates (NEA) and Jafco Ventures.
