The number of Set Top Boxes in CAS areas - where it is obligatory for every multi system operator/cable operator to transmit or retransmit programmes of any pay channel through an addressable system from a specified date - was 8,04,837, as of March 31st 2011. In India, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai are CAS notified areas. Interestingly, the data from TRAI shows that there was a sudden dip in the reported Set Top Boxes between June and September 2009. The corresponding TRAI report for September 2009 suggests that one of the cable TV service providers in the Chennai area stopped services that month, hence the sharp decline. It's been almost two years, and STBs are yet to cross the June 2009 mark.
