Airtel Bangladesh Touches 5 Million Customers; Plans Service Expansion

Airtel Bangladesh recently crossed 5 million customers. Following this, the company is planning to expand its services and network across the country. According to a statement from the company, it has added 160 towns to its network in the last 6 months, taking its total coverage area to 2100 towns. The company plans to cover 72% of the population by December 2011.It has a total of 2220 BTS sites and has rolled out 46 new BTS sites. Airtel Bangladesh also plans to setup 600 service centers by March 2012. Airtel Bangladesh had also recently launched ‘Airtel Live’ WAP portal to offer multimedia content like games, videos and pictures. The company claims to have more than 20,000 apps in the Airtel App Central for their Bangladesh customers. At present, it provides various value added services such as caller tunes in Bengali apart from Hindi and English, Gaan Bolo, Gaan Pao, Classified services such as jobs alert and matrimonial alert, FM Radio stations including vernacular radio stations such as Radio Amar and Radio Foorti, and different finance services like stock alert, SMS banking among others. Airtel had acquired a majority stake of 70% in Warid Telecom in January 2010 and rechristened it to Airtel Bangladesh in December 2010. It had reportedly invested an initial sum of $300 million in Warid Telecom and plans to invest a total of  $1 billion.
