MWC 2011: Samsung; Sony Ericsson; Qualcomm; Access; VeriFone, appMobi, Skype Access, GSMA, Navteq, ooVoo

Even before the Mobile World Congress commenced, Samsung announced updated versions of its Android based flagship smartphone, Galaxy S and table, Galaxy Tab. The Galaxy S II will feature a bigger 4.3 inch AMOLED screen, dual-core 1GHz Prcessor, 8MP camera with 1080p video capture support and Android 2.3-Gingerbread, in addition to support for NFC (Near Field Communication) just like the Nexus S. Samsung’s new tablet, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 features a 10.1 inch screen(the original Tab sported a 7 inch screen), is powered by a 1GHz dual-core processor and features the latest tablet-optimized version of Android, Honeycomb. Samsung has partnered wit Vodafone and the tablet is expected to go on sale this spring in 20 markets where Vodafone operates. Press Release

Sony Ericsson also announced its anticipated PlayStation phone, the Xperia Play. The Android powered smartphone, due for launch in selected European and Asian markets, will also launch in the US markets through CDMA carrier Verizon Wireless. The phone features a slideout gaming keyboard with a digital D-Pad, distinctive PlayStation buttons and two analogue touch pads and shoulder buttons. Sony Ericsson also announced two other Smartphones in the Xperia lineup- the Xperia Pro and Xperia Neo. All the phones run on Android 2.3-Gingerbread mobile OS. Press Release

Access, maker of the NetFront mobile web browser, in collaboration with its JV company Oki Access,  introduced the NetFront VideoTalk, a software solution that brings video calling to Android devices. It also announced the ACCESS Digital publishing eco system, for publishers to convert content and target iPad, iPhone and Android devices. Press Release

VeriFone Systems announced the deployment of its NFC payment acceptance systems in Turkey’s Garanti Bank  NFC SIM mobile paymkent program. Press Release

– VAS provider ArpuPlus announced the Mobile Bananas app store, which would be the Middle East and Northern Africa’s first mobile operator independent app store to offer apps, games, music and graphics among others. Press Release

appMobi launched MobiUS, a mobile web browser technology to allow web developers to create web apps that can ustilize native smartphone and tablet features like Accelerometer, Camera, Contacts, Device file and storage system, GPS and geo location and notification system among others, just like native apps. Wipro Technologies is working with Continuous Computing to provide carrier class, Deep Packet Inspection and Femtocell products for network equipment providers supplying 3G wireless and LTE network infrastructure. Press Release

Skype Access, Skype’s pay as you go Wifi internet access that uses Skype Credit for paying access charges,  has launched a partner program for Wifi hotspot operators. Press Release

– Digital content solutions provider NewBay, launched the LifeCache Digital Vault 2.4 cloud service for operators and device makers, that lets users put their music, videos and other digital content on the cloud and access it through any connected device. Press Release

– The GSMA has announced that HSPA based mobile broadband connections have increased by 100% year-on-year crossing 400 million globally, according to figures from research firm Wireless Intelligence. Press Release

Qualcomm announced its next mobile processor architecture for its Snapdragon range. Code named, Krait, these will offer speeds upto 2.5 GHz per core and deliver 150% higher overall performance and consume 65% lower power than currently available ARM based cores. They will be available in sigle, dual and quad cores and include a new Adreno GPU series and a multi mode LTE modem. Press Release

Qualcomm also announced that future Android devices powered by the Snapdragon platform will also have access to instant streaming of movies and TV shows from Netflix as it fulfills its security requirements. Press Release

Nokia Siemens Networks and MoreMagic Solutions, a mobile commerce provider have tied up to provide mobile commerce and financial services including mobile money transfer and NFC proximity payments. Operators in Libya are testing these services. Press Release

Navteq is supplying data for Logicom’s latest Mappy branded range of personal navigation devices. The models feature Navteq maps of 22 countries in Europe. Press Release

– Video Communication service provider ooVoo is demonstrating a High Definition, multi point video chat on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Mobile Development platform, for Android. Press Release

Samsung SDS launched the Samsung Mobile Business Intelligence Dashboard, an enterprise mobility solution in joint development with SAP AG. The dashboard enables mobile workers to access BI reports, including revenue, customer and inventory data from their Samsung mobile phones. Press Release

Aspiro and Telenor have partnered to launch WiMP, a music service, in Sweden. A paid service, it also collaborates with artists offering special editions and tracks exclusively for its users. Press Release
