Updated: Apple To Launch iPad In India; BSNL Announces Data Plans

Update: Apple has announced pricing for the iPad on its Indian web catalog. The prices are inclusive of all taxes.

One year after its debut, the Apple iPad is going to be launched in India, reports The Telegraph; apparently, Apple accidentally shared details of the iPad launch with The Telegraph reporter Surit Doss because of a bug (he claims) in their cloud MobileMe. The 9.7 inch Tablet will be available only at Apple’s Premium retailers in India, starting 28 January 2011. Both the 3G and 3G+Wifi versions of the device will be available. The pricing (right) as reported by The Telegraph, is anything between 14-17% higher than the converted USD prices (at current rates).

In preparation for this launch, BSNL, which has the widest 3G rollout in India (courtesy of a significant head-start over private telecom operators), has announced dedicated data plans for the 3G+WiFi version of the device on its 3G network. The Prepaid starter pack, priced at Rs 100 will come with a free usage of 1GB per month for 6 months. Mobigyaan had reported the plans first, and MediaNama has since confirmed the pricing from BSNL.

Postpaid customers will need to pay an activation charge of Rs 100 and only have the option of choosing the Monthly Unlimited plan. What this does for BSNL, is increase the ARPU for each subscriber using the iPad. Note that BSNL has clearly specified that there is no contract, and a company representative told MediaNama that it has no plans to retail the device. The data plans from BSNL seem to be reasonable. Mobigyaan suggests that there is no FUP (Fair Usage Policy) clause attached. It also remains to be seen if other operators will roll out their own iPad data plans and match BSNL’s tariffs.
