Techzone, a Chennai based mobile Value Added Services company has bagged exclusive rights for music from Phonographic Performance Ltd (PPL), for Caller Ringback Tones (CRBT) and Mobile Radio, specifically for Reliance Communications. The rights are with TechZone for a period of two years, Naveen Bhandari, Director, TechZone, told MediaNama.
PPL licenses forward music from key Indian film labels like Saregama, Venus, Tips, Sonymusic, Adiya, Sagarika, Asha Audio, Sangeetha, among others. What’s particularly interesting is that PPL licenses rights according to platform / domain, and specific to a telecom operators; further slicing and dicing of rights, it appears. TechZone has the rights for RBT and Mobile Radio, which covers a majority of VAS revenue generated.
In addition, TechZone says it has exclusive content rights for Universal Music (WAP), as well as content from Viacom18 for MTV, Nick, VH1 and Colors, covering WAP & Brew, and 2G and 3G downloads.
Segmentation of Digital Rights
But how are rights currently being segmented in the music business? Bhandari said that as a particular segment develops, rights are licensed separately for it. As of now, rights in the market are being segmented according to the following, well, segments:
– WAP and Brew
– Interactive Voice Response (IVR) or Voice Portal
– Caller Ringback Tone (CRBT)
– Mobile Radio
– 3G Downloads
– 3G Streaming
If you take the Indian Premier League, then rights were segmented according to SMS & MMS, Interactive Voice & Video Response (IVVR), Games, Online Video and Online streaming as well.
