A A Khan & Associates and Mumbai Police Raid  and Seize Pirated CDs and DVDs Worth Rs 265,000

A A Khan & Associates along with the Mumbai Police have raided two locations in Mumbai and seized more than 4500 pirated discs worth over Rs 265,000. The first raid was conducted at Andheri West, in a Godown next to the railway station. The second was carried out at Matunga West. The pirated CDs and DVDs at both the places included Ram Gopal Varna’s Rann, Vishal Bharadwaj’s “Ishqiya”. Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s “3 Idiots” & Salman Khan starrer “Veer”. Marathi movies “Jhenda” and Natrang” and yet to be released English movie. “Law Abiding Citizen” were also there.  Four people have been arrested respectively. Salimuddin Khan, age 22, has been arrested during Andheri Raid. Three stall owners, Raju Prakash Teli, age 22, Dinesh Amrutlal Gupta age 25 & Santosh Kumar Sahu, age 28 were arrested during the Matunga Raid.

Balaji Telefilms has announced the launch of an iPhone application named Ganesha Stories under its New Media initiative. The app allows users to access aartis and stories about Lord Ganesha on the move.

After Noida, Ghaziabad Look Into Illegal Cell Phone Towers

Taking cue from Noida, the Ghaziabad Development Authority will now start to check the number of illegal cell phone towers in the area. GDA will start with a survey of the district for such mobile towers. According to records available with the authority, there are 185 towers of Airtel, 177 mobile towers of Vodafone, 50 towers of Dolphin and 163 towers of Idea. Reliance has 12 mobile towers, while BSNL has 11. Essar has four mobile towers and Tata Indicom has 13 towers in the district. (Read more at Indian Express)

Quippo To Raise $4 Billion For Tower Business Expansion

Quippo Telecom Infrstructure is looking at raising $4 billion through equity, debt and a combination of both. The funds will be used to expand tower business from 30000 units to 60000 in the next two years. (Read more at Sify Business)

GTL To Raise Rs 14 Billion

GTL is raising Rs 14 billion through non-convertible debentures (NCDs) to invest in green energy products and solutions for telecom infrastructure that would help bring down costs for telecom operators. The NCD offer coupon rate of 8 percent. Revenue from green solutions is expected ti increase to Rs 2500 crore in the next 2-3 years after the company adds 20000 towers. Neel Chowdhury Joins Obopay

Neel Chowdhury, VP, marketing, CNBC TV-18 and CNBC Awaaz has quit and joined US based Obopay as VP and chief marketing officer.   Prior to Network 18, Chowdhury was chief marketing officer for Times Global Broadcasting.   He has also worked with Bharti Telecom, Tata Teleservices and PepsiCo International. BSNL’s 93 Million Line Tender

The 93 million GSM line tender of PSU BSNL has now been referred to Prime Minister’s advisor on infrastructure and innovation Sam Pitroda. The decision was taken after communications and IT minister A Raja wrote a letter to the PM asking for intervention in the tender.  (Read more at Business Standard)

Pressmart Is iPad Ready

Essar Eyes Africa; Plans To Invest $2 Billion In Telecom

Essar Group has plans to invest over $2 billion in African telecom to have mobile operations in six to seven countries of the region. The $2 billion investment is estimated to acquire 20 million customers. (Read more at afaqs!)

Google Launches Orkut Extension For Chrome

Google has launched an Orkut extension for its web browser Chrome. The extension will appear as an Orkut icon on the browser’s toolbar and allows users to view unseen updates from friends.   There is also the “share this page” feature which allows users to share web content to friends on Orkut and a search box.  (Read more at Google Reader)
