MTNL Official Telecom Provider For Commonwealth Games 2010

PSU telco MTNL has been designated as the official telecom service provider for the upcoming Commonwealth Games 2010 to be held in Delhi and will be receiving Rs 1.82 billion from the Indian government for the purpose.

MTNL will set up a dedicated telecommunication network to be obtained on wet lease which will include supply, installation, testing, commissioning, operation and maintenance and providing professional services. Wet lease is a term normally used for aircraft when there is a short term lease lease to supply a complete aircraft package including the aircraft, crew, maintenance and insurance.

The primary goal for MTNL is to set up an efficient system of communications that will allow transmission of games data, security data, high definition broadcast signal (HDTV) between sports venue, international broadcasting centers, press center, master control facilities etc.

Two Networks – Managed Data & Broadcast

There will be two separate networks. One will provide coverage to all Games applications, administrative and video surveillance for security agencies, VOIP, internet services at designated venues along with the management system. This network will be called the Managed Data Network (MDN).

The second, the Broadcast Network, will provide an exclusive coverage for video applications to facilitate uncompressed high definition studio to studio; video transport from stadium to IBC and Cable Access TV  Broadcast Network.

MTNL has planned out the network with multiple redundancies using high capacity Internet Protocol / Multi Protocol Label Switching (IP / MPLS). The operator will also provide Dark Fiber along with IP/MPLS at no cost to the Government. The Commonwealth Games are scheduled to begin in 200 days.
