Sandip Basu has joined Loop Mobile and Loop Telecom as the Chief Executive Officer, from XCEL Telecom, a passive infrastructure provider, where he was the MD and CEO. XCEL Telecom was acquired by American Tower Corporation in March this year. In a sense, this is something of a homecoming: Basu was with the BPL Mobile Group from 1997 to 2005, his last role at the Group being as Executive Director and CEO. Basu will lead the national launch of Loop Telecom and look to strengthen the position of Loop Mobile in Mumbai; this is particularly important given that Loop, formerly BPL, is an incumbent operator in Mumbai, and faces the risk of losing subscribers once mobile number portability kicks in. BPL Mobile underwent a brand name change exercise to Loop Mobile recently. The company has completed a Rs. 300 crore network upgradation, and its subsidiary Loop Telecom has launched pan India operations under the Loop Mobile brand in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Orissa.
