Date: 2nd to 6th Feb 2009 Segments: Editorial, Poll Results, Earnings, Discussion, Articles, Industry News, Events, Jobs Editorial Last Thursday, I attended a discussion on India's Information Technology Act (Amendment) 2008 organized by Assocham. The law was passed on December 22nd by the Lok Sabha, and 23rd by the Rajya Sabha without any debate, much like its predecessor - the IT Act of 2000. On the panel were two key government executives who were involved with the framing of the Act - Jainder Singh, Secretary of the Ministry of Information & Technology, Gulshan Rai, Director for India's Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-IN). They will also be instrumental in finalizing the specific rules that will impact the operations Digital Media and Telecom businesses, as well as IT, ITES; in that respect, it was important for Indian Internet and Telecom companies to attend. There weren't many people in the audience, so the discussion was open, occasionally sharp and always insightful. Representatives from Google, Microsoft and E-Bay were there, but sadly, apart from Bharti Airtel and Time Broadband, one found that most Indian Digital companies and their representative organizations did not participate. Indian companies lost the opportunity to put forth their point of view and impact the framing of the rules that will impact all of our businesses, while Google was fairly upfront with their viewpoint.
