Nokia & Zook: A new search application is now available for Nokia handset users. The IIM- Bangalore incubated Ziva Software’s Zook search engine is now available for download on Nokia phones from its application gallery. The search can also be performed over WAP or SMS. Zook introduces ‘search networking’, allowing you to share your search results with contacts in your phonebook. It offers location-aware search, without the need for GPS. Zook automatically derives your approximate location (probably by using cell phone tower identification) and shows results around your location. The application also lets you know when your contacts are online or close by. It also allows users to set personalized alerts and search for deals. You can even download SMS forwards and games for your Series 60 mobile.
MTNL’s MobileVoice Email: Soon over 7 million landline and mobile subscribers of MTNL will be able to avail of its new service called Mobile Voice Email. MTNL’s technology and sales partner Mantec Consultants, in partnership with the US-based mobile solutions developer One Voice, will launch a mobile email service called MobileVoice later this month. OneVoice Technologies uses a patented technology for speech recognition called Intelligent Voice Solution. Its voice activated solutions allow users to SMS, page, e-mail, purchase items online, control devices and search for phone numbers by just speaking.
MTNL’s Voice Email will allow users to access, read and send emails from their Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, AOL or even corporate accounts right from their phone – be it a landline or a wireless. The operator estimates that over the next year, more than 3 lakh MTNL subscribers will subscribe to the new service. We feel that is being too optimistic. If, like OneVoice’s other products, MobileVoice Email is also a voice activated service, then how many subscribers would really take to it? Would it be comfortable to enunciate your password and dictate emails to a telephone, whether in public or at home? Speech recognition softwares have not gained traction in the country.
Games People Play: After Ghajini and Chandni Chowk to China, another mobile game has been launched on a Bollywood movie. Indiagames’ mobile game is based on the character Dev in the yet to be released Dev D movie. In the game, you start off having just split up with Chanda and morosely roam in pubs and bars, playing games like darts and meeting people who give you clues on how to reach and win Chanda back. Launching such games as part of the promos of movies is becoming popular as producers search for new ways to attract youngsters, their primary target audience. The movie is directed by Anurag Kashyap and stars Abhay Deol as DevD.
