MySpace’s Mobile Plans For India: iPhone App, WAP, But No Indian Languages

MySpace has launched a mobile application for the iPhone, and John Faith, GM & VP (Mobile) for MySpace told MediaNama that while the company is planning to launch the app in 12 different languages in 21 countries, they’re focusing on English for India. There also isn’t a timeframe for when MySpace will launch an Indian language application.

To propote the application in India, MySpace is in talks with carriers. We know that both Vodafone and Airtel are planning to launch the iPhone in India this year, but Nokia remains the market-leader in India. Faith said that they don’t have any plans for a Nokia/Symbian application yet, and for India, they’re also focusing on the WAP offering. MySpace’s WAP site – http://m.myspace.com – had 1.7 million daily uniques in the US.

Deep Malhotra, Director of Sales & Business Development for MySpace India told MediaNama that talks are on with operators, and MySpace intends to be present in India on SMS, WAP and Applications. The MySpace WAP site hasn’t been customized for India yet, and they planning to localise the WAP site for India and also allowing signups via mobile, given the slow growth of broadband. Talks are also on for pre-loaded applications, at a global level. Malhotra reiterated that Indian languages are not yet a priority for MySpace – they’re first looking to get the English language users on board.
