Update (March 16th): Looks like YouTube’s got its act together. The live streaming is working fine for me today. I’m in the office, watching the Royal Challengers challenge the Kings XI Punjab on YouTube.

Earlier (March 15th): The five-minute-deferred-live webcast of the Indian Premier League Cricket tournament on YouTube struggled over the weekend, facing technical difficulties, or just not loading: it was disastrous. Users frequently saw YouTube’s version of ‘the blue screen of death’, stating that “We may be experiencing some technical difficulties. Please stay tuned.”

Bharti Airtel might be giving its users a leg-up, switching them to 2mbps speed when accessing the IPL on YouTube, but this means little if the streaming isn’t working. Even though the streaming did resume, it was intermittent, and the picture quality was rather poor. Given that this was YouTube’s first day of almost-live streaming the IPL, one could expect teething troubles. However, issues continued into Day two, with the site being inaccessible, and at times returning the blue screen. Readers should remember that IPLT20.com also had similar issues last year, though the picture quality was better.

But this is just a small glitch for YouTube: we believe that the company is viewing these IPL streaming rights as a long term investment, and wouldn’t be surprised if they retain them next year as well. The IPL is to YouTube in India what the Olympics was to NBC. This showcase event is a big part of Google’s plan to attract key advertisers to YouTube, now that the company has several channels of premium and professional content on the website, in partnership with media companies. For the IPL, YouTube has managed to land Royal Challengers, HSBC India, HP, Airtel, Coca Cola and Samsung as advertisers.

Apart from the IPL page banner advertisements, pre-rolls and mid-roll video ads, we also noticed “Paste-Up” advertisements from HSBC during the screening of the first game. HSBC might want to do something about the transparent creatives, though:

ITV has secured UK broadcast rights for the 2010 Indian Premier League T20 cricket tournament to be shown on its digital channel ITV4 for an undisclosed amount. The channel will broadcast 59 out of the 60 matches, all free-to-air. ITVs live coverage will be free to air on Freeview, Freesat, Sky and Virgin.presented by Matt Smith alongside Bollywood actress and presenter Mandira Bedi, and analyst Simon Hughes.

What’s interesting about this deal is that ITV will also hold online rights for live streaming. In an emailed response to MediaNama’s query on conflict of live streaming rights with YouTube, an ITV spokesperson wrote: “ITV.com will have a bespoke section of the site for IPL which will include live simulcasts of the matches. It is my understanding that YouTube’s UK rights will be on a 5 minute delay.” (emphasis, ours)

Like we’ve said previously, the Indian Premier League has been rather creative in carving up its rights, and this is just another indication. So what’s next: selling 5 minute delayed rights, then 10 minute delayed rights, followed by 15 minute delayed rights?

Earlier, it was announced that Singapore based Sigma Ventures and Chennai based DCI Mobile Studios has acquired ‘global mobile smartphone rights’ for 8 years. vROcks Mobile Communication has the global SMS, MMS and IVR rights for the tournament for the period of 5 years.

Twenty nine percent of Indians polled have already paid for books (note: not e-books) online, 19 percent have paid for online magazines, and 18 percent have paid for music, a survey conducted by The Nielsen Company has suggested. The survey was across 54 countries, and 27,000 consumers, designed to examine consumer attitudes to paying for online content – with mobile these numbers would have been quite different.

Fifty percent of the Indian consumers polled said they would pay for books in the future too, closely followed by magazines and music (both at 47%). And of course, soap-opera fans (46%) were willing to pay for professionally produced videos such as current television shows. Others voted for theatrical movies (45%) and games (44%).

Nikhil adds: A caveat. Please keep in mind that Nielsen hasn’t disclosed the sample size for India, or the sampling methodology, both of which significantly impact survey results; hence don’t take these results as being indicative of a census. How many of you believe that 46% of any user base (leave alone Indians) will pay for TV shows online? Dream on.

Demand For Better Quality

Three fourth of the Indians surveyed by Nielsen are willing to pay for the content if the quality is significantly better than what is currently free online.

Advertising

More than six out of ten (66%) Indians surveyed actually want more online advertisements while surfing, if it can help reduce the the cost of the content offered.

User Generated Content

While blogs, social communities and consumer generated videos (those put up on Youtube, etc) are not worth paying for, the majority of consumers in India feel. Online news broadcasts/radio and podcasts are all but dead to us Indians too: 66 percent of Indians are not willing to pay for news/talk radio and 60 percent do not want to pay for podcasts.

Download the report here.

Apalya, a mobile video application company, has launched vFlash TV as part of the launch of Virgin’s USB modem device vFlash. This is similar to the launch of Photon TV with Virgin’s franchise partner Tata Indicom. Apalya CEO Vamshi Reddy told Medianama that both the services are similar in terms of pricing and services because both run on the TTSL backbone, though there is a difference will be in the viewing experiece, as they have upgraded the technology.

vFlash TV offers users access to 22 live channels, and is free for the first month. After that a single channel will cost Rs 4, 10 channels will cost Rs 29 and all channels will cost Rs 75 for every month. It also has personalization features like bookmarking favorite channels and programmes.

How MiMobi Did During Tendulkar’s Double Century

Reddy says that Photon TV completely consumed their 100 Mbps dedicated data pipe during the double century knock of Sachin Tendulakar in the second ODI of the recently concluding India-South Africa Series. The matches were broadcasted as via tie-up with CricketNirvana, which also saw a tremendous increase online during the epic event. Readers should note that Cricinfo, the most popular Cricket site on the web, claimed to have received 45 million pageviews, and lost two servers.

Reddy also said that there has been a change viewership trends since the launch of Photon TV. Prior to Photon TV, people traffic for Apalya’s mobile TV app used to peak between 6 to 11 in the evening. With the consistent connectivity and speeds that EVDO provides, Photon TV and vFlash traffic is consistent from 9:30 in the morning up till 8 in the evening, he claims. Also, in order to make the viewing time seamless (because of lack of consistency of connectivity in wireless data card connectivity), there is a buffering time of 7 seconds.

Reddy told Medianama that at present they get a share of the subscription revenue, though they are evaluating other options as well. For the telecom operator, apart from the subscription revenue share, the residual bandwidth that the consumer has bought also gets consumed by the data heavy service.

Do YOU buy music videos from the Internet? I don’t, but Hungama thinks you do and wants to make a business out of it. Hungama will allow users to download international music videos to their phones and PCs. International music videos available are of artists such as Pet Shop Boys, Duran Duran, Michael Learns to Rock, Richard Marx, Queen, Roxette among other from EMI Music and Warner.

The company claims that popular video downloads for this month include Sleeping Child & The Actor by Michael Learns to Rock, Fix You by Coldplay, ‘We are the champions’ by Queen, ‘Right here waiting’ by Richard Marx, ’A beautiful lie’ by 30 seconds to Mars. Not many contemporary videos there, and it appears there are several closet MLTR fans in India. Hungama already has Bollywood and regional Indian music videos.

Pricing

Hungama has a general pricing model for all types of downloads from its site including music tracks, ringtones, videos and mobile wallpapers. The same will also be applicable for the international music videos as well. Users can download unlimited content for Rs 99 per month. For Rs 20 users can download a mix of 4 videos, music tracks, ringtones or wallpapers. A single download would cost Rs 10.

Why Would I and Why Wouldn’t I Buy A Music Video From Hungama

Music videos are primarily made to sell respective albums and songs, not the video itself. More interactive content on mobile phones like games become monotonous and boring after a while, music videos are just to watch. One would rather download the music legally from the mobile at the same price, given the condition that a friend can’t Bluetooth it over, or the Internet at home is not working, and the cyber cafe in my neighbourhood has a different choice of music. A typical India consumer likes music for for free.

For a music lover the video will take up extra space on his mobile that he would rather have filled with more music. The one reason a user might download a music video would be because he is getting a video from Hungama at the same price as the audio file.

Hungama-EMI Partnership

Earlier, Hungama signed a content distribution deal with EMI Music, a music company with record labels such as Astralwerks, Blue Note, Capitol Records, Parlophoneand Virgin Records. According to the agreement, Hungama will be in charge of distribution of digital music from EMI Music and EMI’s licensing partner Warner Music Group for four countries – India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Hungama will distribute full length music tracks, videos, mobile wallpapers, live concert footage, ringtones, caller ring back tones etc through Internet and over the mobile – its recently launched online music store Hungama.com as well as the store it deployed for telco BSNL earlier.

It’s been three years since Commonwealth Educational Media Centre for Asia CEMCA’s EasyNow virtual campus project began, but the going is still rough thanks to technophobia: “It is just a demo piece in India,” rues Dr. R. Sreedhar, Director, CEMCA. Is the project doomed to be extinguished like a Candle In The Wind? India is one of the five founding members of the Commonwealth of Learning, an international organisation under which CEMCA operates. Yet the subcontinent has witnessed dismal uptake of the learning models and materials developed.

What is EasyNow?

EasyNow is an open source driven project, the brainchild of V. Krishnamoorthy, Consultant, CEMCA, for educational institutes that would help faculty digitise all their lectures and deliver them in nine digital formats including text to speech including CDs, DVDs, video streaming online, enriched video incorporating graphics, audio, text-to-speech, slide show using PowerPoint or other presentation packages and text. CEMCA even offers to get the lectures printed in Braille using software from IIT Chennai for the visually impaired.

Also read about EasyNow on WikiEducator

Simply put, EasyNow gives students an upgrade from plain classroom learning to a multimedia presentation that includes videos, an audio clip or even streaming video for correspondence courses. It also offers compression technology for the videos to be streamed online, required because video lectures can hog up memory. Take an example – a typical IIT engineering course can take up to 32GB of memory, according to Sreedhar. Comparing it with IGNOU, which provides long distance courses online, Sreedhar said, “You cant get an IGNOU programme outside IGNOU but here u can use it with an Internet connection or the new USB modems like Proton.”

The tools used are easily available software such as Open Office and Powerpoint. “We use primarily open source technology, so it comes as no cost for users,” says Sreedhar. It also uses Adobe Photoshop and Windows Movie Maker.

Uptake So Far

EasyNow has experienced success in other countries – Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and the Maldives, where it has conducted workshops and seen interest from the education community. In India last year, at Tirupati, videos of IIT courses were released by EasyNow – lecturers were offered USB drives with multimedia material. EasyNow has also been voluntarily to all state governments, the National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT) and University Grants Commission (UGC).

Do read: Delhi University Digitizes Texts…But Where Are They?

“Remains As A Demo Piece In India”

But a disillusioned Sreedhar says that the current situation is that “Nobody wants to try it. Indians want proprietary software and training in 5 star hotels. Our leaderships are more tuned towards multinationals.” What about competition from e-learning firms? “Corporates don’t know about us.”

Sreedhar blames the disinterest in EasyNow on “computer illiteracy of our leaders”, adding that “A majority of the politicians only know how to operate e-mail, especially those above 50 years of age. Our Indian mindset is not tuned to open source. Computer literacy is so low in the country, people would like to go in for servers/harddisks and learning management tools.” Can this attitude change or will EasyNow die an early death?

Nuance Communications announced an enhanced version of Nuance T9 Write, the company’s handwriting technology for touch screen and pen-based devices that features multi-touch gesture and on-top writing capabilities.

Nuance T9 Write integrates input with Nuance XT9 predictive text to enhance recognition of naturally shaped letters, numbers, symbols and punctuation in more than 40 languages. With Nuance T9 Write users can quickly enter text by writing out words and symbols directly on–screen and the device learns user’s preferred vocabulary and even adds new words based on user communication patterns

It also supports user shortcuts including abbreviations for commonly-used phrases, email addresses and other frequently used words and phrases, and features a handwriting method called “on-top” writing that the company claims allows users to write each letter or symbol directly on top of each other, versus across the screen, important for smaller user interfaces.

The new version also includes customisable multi- touch gestures where users can use their fingers to write and edit. For example, a single finger swipe will delete specific characters, two fingers will delete an entire word, and a full swipe of the hand will delete the entire message

It’s quite a time to launch a video portal: the budget coverage would probably be the biggest money-making opportunity for CNBC-TV18 and MoneyControl in a year, and there can be no greater stress-test for MyTV, or for that matter, windfall for Web18s CDN partner (Akamai, I think). They’ve launched with Cisco as a sponsor. To introduce the service, users accessing MoneyControl.com are being redirected to MyTV.

Along with the live video streaming at MoneyControl MyTV, the site has essential features like live charts for the Sensex and the Nifty, a comment box, tickers for stocks and headlines, most watched videos, news updates segmented as Business, Market Outlook, Stock Advice and World News, and graphical representation of market cap, and advances and declines. According to the release, MoneyControl also intends to show My TV Specials and on-demand sponsored shows.

As with most Web18 properties, the interface is clean at the time of launch, with just three ad units. We wonder how long before the irritating shoshkele’s and rollovers are introduced.

Integration With MoneyControl, IndiaEarnings?

MoneyControl MyTV doesn’t appear to have been integrated yet with the main properties yet. Videos at MoneyControl and IndiaEarnings are still showcased within the main site, without the MyTV brand, though there is a 30 second pre-roll advertisement for MyTV. Videos have also not been integrated into specific stock pages: Axis Bank, for example. The videos on the stocks watchlist page still redirect to MoneyControl Videos. To be honest, as a user, I don’t want to be redirected every time to MyTV, and would prefer to view the videos within the page or site that I am viewing. I’d also prefer to have access to conference calls (presently at IndiaEarnings) within MoneyControl. So why have multiple properties, instead of one comprehensive page for all content? To create advertising inventory?

It began with a subscription model, and later switched to an an advertising supported public feed. Tensports, supported by NBC Universal, later followed suit, and recently, YouTube acquired rights for the Indian Premier League, and plans to stream it free. MediaNama spoke with Jose Felix, VP(New Media), Nimbus Communications to understand better their experience with live streaming, the advertising model, and whether it’s been a viable business proposition so far.

Why did you switch from subscription to ad supported live streaming?

With the subscription model we were predominantly targeting people from India because rights for US and other places are syndicated to other broadcasting companies. This is a space with no history, and we realized that in a country like India, people are not willing to pay for content even if it is Cricket. You cannot generate enough revenue to cover the CDN cost. After 2-3 series, we started free streaming. World wide none of the sporting events are free, all the events go on subscription.

We are trying out different combinations, but the one that worked is VDOPIA’s VLive Techonology, through which we were able to crack in-stream videos during live stream, pre-rolls and mid-rolls. I think we started during the India – Australia series, and were able to stabilise this particular service from the second series onwards. Prior to that we had two series for free, and the revenue model there was Video on Demand, but there was no facility to insert video during live stream.

So you get a clear feed, and you insert the video ads? Are the ads now able to cover your costs?

We are a broadcasting company: the clear feed goes to my studio, where we have the ability to switch from live stream to advertisement. We started monetising it through ads between overs and during breaks. We are breaking even at the CDN cost level, even at the operational cost level. Breaking even at the rights level is a challenge which we are trying to address. It takes time to get it right.

What type of advertising model have you adopted and what rates are you charging?

There is no choice in India except CPM (Cost per Milli impressions). The rates vary – for example we were averaging about Rs. 275 – 300 CPM during the India-Sri Lanka series. Currently we are averaging Rs. 450-500 CPM.

How many impressions do you deliver during a match?

On a normal day we average about 150,000 hours of streaming, often more. Per hour you have approximately 10 overs, and 11 breaks. You have around 100 overs in a match, so you typically have 102 breaks. So lets take another 15 wickets, that is 125 breaks. We also use the NEO feed for pre-match, lunch break and post- match analysis, a total of 1.5 hrs, with breaks.

What are the challenges that you face?

Traditionally what happens in the Internet space, the challenges are that the advertisers that we have are the ones that have evolved, because people wonder whether anyone will watch Cricket on the Internet. Many don’t realize that if only 10000 people, you pay only for 10000 people. VLive has a tracking mechanism. The other challenge we face is that people complain that there are ads during live stream. They don’t expect ads on the Internet, and do not understand that we incur huge CDN costs. One of the biggest challenges in this space is to manage the cost of streaming. We use Tata Communications (BitGravity).

What are some of the trends that you have noticed?

When we started, we thought that we would have ten percent traffic during Test Matches as compared to One Day Internationals. It turned out that Tests actually give traffic at par with ODIs on a single match day basis. I think it has something to do with the nature of the Test. People are in the office and they want to check it for half an hour, forty minutes.

In terms of the recent tri-series we have had a dip of 30-40% in traffic when Sri Lanka and Bangladesh played. The traffic spikes when India plays and increases about 40-50% when India bats. It is generally a peak when Sachin (Tendulkar) bats. When India is playing, it is at its lowest when the opponents are batting. When India is doing very badly, the traffic reduces by 10 points. For other matches, we were quite surprised during the Sri Lanka -Bangladesh match, that the traffic was more when Bangladesh was batting.

Which rights do you own?

We are actually number one Indian video portal, not just cricket in terms of the amount of video served. It is not just BCCI, we have the rights for Bangladesh Cricket Board, Cricket Kenya, the Asian Cricket Council, which hosts the Afro-Asian Cup and Asia Cup.

What are you thoughts on licensing the digital rights out like Global Cricket Ventures has done with YouTube? Would you take that approach?

The rights are owned by Nimbus Communications Limited, we have a division that manages the rights called Nimbus Sports. Nimbus Sports has given us the rights. The general practise is that the TV players buy out the internet rights too so we have Internet, Radio and Television rights. From April 1st we have mobile rights too. Somebody who is buying the rights for the region will also buy Internet rights and keep it within its control because traditionally in the markets like US and UK the Internet right can actually jeopardise your TV revenue. So what they do they join with Internet players or live stream in their own site and ask for subscription.
