Truecaller, which has 100 million users in India, claims that users are making over 500 million calls monthly from its app, 4 months since it launched the dialer. In March this year, Truecaller said that it would display availability (online/offline) status of contacts, call history feature that replaces unknown numbers with names and a built-in dialer that allowed users to make calls directly from the Truecaller app.

In 2014, the company had introduced an alternate dialer app called Truedialer for Android and Windows Phone that provided information about the number users were about to call and also allowed them to search unknown numbers on Truecaller. In September 2015, Truecaller had introduced the ‘availability’ feature on its Truedialer Android app.

Truemessenger SMS filtering app

Note that in July 2015, Truecaller launched an Android messaging app called Truemessenger which claimed to have an automated spam filter for the Indian market. Truemessenger would do what Truecaller does for phone calls, it would identify the sender of the SMS through its user base, especially for contacts outside a user’s phone book. However, it first needs to be set as the default messaging app in order to block spam and unsolicited messages.

Huawei partnership and other phones on which Truecaller comes preloaded

Today, Truecaller has partnered with Huawei to preload the Truecaller app in Huawei’s flagship devices starting with Honor 8. This partnership will be live in the US, Middle East and North Africa (MENA), and Southeast Asia and India by next month. In May 2015, Cyanogen had partnered with Truecaller to make the caller ID and blocking service app as its default native dialer app. In December 2015, Truecaller partnered with Intex to integrate Truecaller and Truedialer in its Aqua Young smartphone devices.

Recent developments:
– In May this year, Truecaller updated its filtering algorithm to narrow down its spam list to a regional level. Previously the company filtered the list on a national level, however, it mentions that India sees more than 300 million spam calls per month, so it narrowed it down on a regional basis.
– In June, Truecaller appointed Arun Sarin to its advisory board.
– In November last year, Truecaller launched a transliteration feature on the app to display user names in Hindi.
