Aadhaar may be made compulsory for train travel in India
July 8, 2016: IRCTC may mandate Aadhaar number linkage for train travel in India. The rollout will be across two phases: In phase 1, those who get concessions (senior citizens, freedom fighters and the physically handicapped) will need it, and later, the general population. Haryana’s PDS system will allow Aadhaar biometric authentication by November
July 10, 2016: Haryana has 99% Aadhaar enrollment, and the states Public Distribution System (PDS) will be online from November 1st 2016 to enable biometric authentication. More in The Indian Express
Kerala: aadhaar linked health register will store citizen health data
July 6, 2016: Kerala state government is planning an e-health register linked to Aadhaar, which will contain the health status of of all citizens, says Health and Family Welfare Minister K K Shailaja. More in New Indian Express.
Eko partners with NPCI for Aadhaar-linked remittances
July 4, 2016: Financial services company Eko has partnered with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to offer an Aadhar-linked remittance service. More at Business Standard
Aadhaar card forged
July 10, 2016: The Aadhaar card was forged by pasting a new photograph and taking a color photo-copy. A case has been registered under “section 465 (forgery), 471 (using as genuine a forged document or electronic record) and section 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code”. Aadhaar being made mandatory for filing police complaints in Maharasthra
July 8th, 2016: The Maharashtra state Home Department has apparently made it mandatory to use the Aadhaar card for filing a police complaint in the state. This is being seen by lawyers in Pune as against fundamental rights (Articles 14 and 21). An unnamed home department official has been quoted as saying: “The move is being implemented across the state on a low scale and the police are not forcing complainants to get a UIDAI card, if they do not have one. But, gradually, it will be made compulsory.” Details in Pune Mirror.
1.5 Lakh duplicate Aadhaar number holders detected
July 5, 2016: In Hisar, over 1.5 Lakh (1,500,000) duplicate Aadhaar number holders have been detected. One Aadhaar number has been provided more than once in a large number of cases. An NIC official has blamed the feeding of the number, or people using the same number at multiple places. More at The Tribune
Russia, Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia are interested in an Aadhaar like system and India is helping them
July 9, 2016: The World Bank is facilitating the promotion of the Aadhaar like model globally, with Russia, Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia interested. TRAI Chief RS Sharma, Department of IT and MEA are promoting Aadhaar. More details in Mint.
A month from now, Karnataka’s ration distribution will only be for those with Aadhaar added to ration cards
July 7, 2016: Karnataka’s Food and Civil Supplies Minister U.T. Khader has said that for a month, ration supplies will not be stopped for those without an Aadhaar card or Aadhaar numbers linked to ration cards. 87% of ration cards had been seeded with the Aadhaar number. More in The Hindu
In Murena (Madhya Pradesh), 12000 families have been denied rations for the month of July for not linking their Aadhaar cards with ration cards. More at Dainik Bhaskar
IOL sent SMS’s to lakhs in Assam saying they won’t receive LPG subsidy
July 10, 2016: In Assam, lakhs of LPG consumers received messages saying that their LPG subsidy had been put on hold because they hadn’t submitted their Aadhaar number. Since then, the Central government has directed Indian Oil Corporation to exempt citizens of Assam because Aadhaar cards haven’t yet been issued in the state. More in Times of India
Idea of sale of mutual funds to aadhaar linked e-commerce customers mooted.
July 5, 2016: A Nandan Nilekani Committee has suggested that Aadhaar based KYC be used to get new investors for mutual fund schemes via ecommerce platforms. Norms may be created for products based on an investors risk profile, based on investors providing their details. More at The Hindu.
Stree Shakti groups asked to link Bank accounts with Aadhaar
July 7, 2016: Members of 4443 Stree Shakti groups (out of 5075) have linked the Aadhaar numbers of their members with Bank accounts, in the the Chitradurga Zila (district). This will apparently help ensure better facilities for women. More in The Hindu.
