Online recharge and coupons site FreeCharge has acquired stealth mode start-up Preburn. Preburn is an offline app store. The New Delhi-based start-up has tied-up with over 150 merchant stores across four cities – Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bangalore and Chennai – and pre-installs a variety of apps on users’ devices at the time of purchase from the retail store.
This is also an acqui-hire like Wishberg, as the Preburn team is expected to join FreeCharge. Last month, Mumbai-based social wishlist site Wishberg shut down its operations, and founders Pravin Jadhav and Kulin Shah moved to FreeCharge.
Services: Traditionally, app publishers tie-up with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to get their app pre-bundled with mobile devices. Preburn is offering an alternative. Preburn also offers services like, real-time analytics, location targeting, device/OS targeting, multi-app mode and user profiling to app publishers.
Clients: The start-up has already worked with brands like, Times Internet’s music streaming service Gaana.com, mobile news aggregator News in Shorts, haptik (which was founded by ex-India head of mobile app analytics and advertising firm Flurry, Aakrit Vaish), online digital content marketplace Readwhere, and Times Internet’s restaurant listing service TimesCity.
Founding team: Preburn was founded by Mohit Mittal, Manikanta Nikhil and Vijaysimhareddy Devarapalli. Mohit doubles up as the Business Strategist, Manikanta is the Product Lead and Vijay is the Tech Lead. Manikanta and Vijay are from IIT Kharagpur, and Mohit is from IIT Madras. The two other members of the Preburn team are Dhara Prashant Maurice, who handles web-mobile development, and Shubham Agarwal, who handles social media and operations. Both Maurice and Shubham are from IIT Madras.
