Tata Sky Investment
DTH service provider Tata Sky plans to invest Rs 900 crore this fiscal to migrate its customers to MPEG-4 standard from MPEG-2 standard, reports PTI (via Business Standard). This migration will apparently allow the company to offer more than 300 channels from approximately 230 channels right now.
Tata Sky CEO Harit Nagpal told the publication that they have already started the migration process and it is likely to be completed by July 2014. Through this, Nagpal hopes to increase Tata Sky’s subscriber base by 25%-30% this fiscal year from the existing 10 million subscribers. Meanwhile, none of DTH players in the country have figured out on how to provide uninterrupted service during the rains.
Notion Ink imShakti Emergency app
Emergency apps seems to be the latest trend right now, with several companies launching their versions of emergency apps. The latest being imShakti from Notion Ink. The app is available as a free download on Google Play Store and allows users to send messages to their listed emergency contacts.
Once installed, users can press the power button five times within two seconds to trigger an emergency text message consisting of the user’s location to their emergency contact. Other apps which provide similar features include OnMobile’s Help Me on Mobile, Meru Cabs’s mobile apps which has an emergency alert feature, CanvasM’s FightBack, SafeTrac, Circle Of 6, and bSafe among others. Airtel had also launched a similar 24×7 emergency SMS alert service for its subscribers in December 2012.
CouponDunia Expands To Indonesia, Brazil, Turkey and Poland
Coupon aggregation sites CouponDunia has expanded to Indonesia, Brazil, Turkey and Poland, reports NextBigWhat. The company has launched dedicated sites for each of these countries – CouponDunia Indonesia, KuponDunya (Turkey), CupomWorld (Brazil) and KodyBony (Poland).
New Vodafone 3G Sites
Vodafone India Business Head (Delhi) Subrat Padhi has told PTI (via The Economic Times) that they plan to add 1,700 3G tower sites in Delhi-NCR over the next year, in a bid to strengthen its infrastructure in the region. The company currently has 8,300 3G sites at present.
Idea Cellular In Talks To Raise Investment
Idea Cellular is apparently in talks with private equity firms to raise investment, reports Business Standard citing a top company official. Idea Cellular Managing Director Himanshu Kapania however has declined to share any information about his meeting with private equity investors to the publication.
RIL & Airtel Tieup with Kolkata Municipal Corporation
Reliance Jio Infocomm, the 4G venture of Reliance Industries (RIL) has inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) to lay out 4G network in the city, reports PTI (via NDTV Profit). As per the agreement, RIL would lay 750 km of optical fibre cable within KMC’s jurisdiction after Durga Puja, while KMC would earn a one-time income of Rs 26 crore.
Following this, Airtel has also inked a similar MoU with KMC to lay out 400 km of optical fibre cable in the city, after Durga Puja, as indicated by another PTI report (via The Economic Times).
New Amazon.in Categories
Amazon India has added four new categories to its website – toys & games, baby products, personal care & healthcare products. It also plans to introduce Home and Kitchen products in the coming weeks. The company has partnered retailers like Croma, Vijay sales, Mahindra Retail, Vividha, Toygully, Kidzoba, Redlily, Mom & Me (Mahindra Retail), Ofororange and Toyworld for this initiative.
In the toys & games section, Amazon claims to offer over 8,500 products from over 80 leading brands including Lego, Funskool, Hotwheels, Barbie, V-Tech, Ravensburger, Mellissa & Doug, Silverlit, and Maisto among others, while in the baby products, it claims to offer over 3,000 products from over 50 brands including Pampers, Huggies, Johnson & Johnson, Medela, Nuby, Himalaya, Pigeon, Hauck and Chicco among others.
The Personal Care Appliances and Health Care Devices categories claim to offer more than 1,100 products from over 60 leading brands including Philips, Panasonic, Omron, Accu-chek, Remington, Braun, J&J, and One Touch among others.
Goibibo Adds Bus Booking on iOS
Goibibo.com has added bus booking to its iOS app, allowing users to book bus tickets. The company claims that the app allows users to search from around 65000 bus routes and filter results based on various factors like bus type, time of travel, boarding point, drop point and bus operators among others.
Updated Zomato iOS app
Online restaurant and events guide Zomato has released an updated version of its iOS app to bring an redesigned interface, mood based restaurant recommendations, ability to search for dishes and the ability for users to upload pictures and revamped location detection systems. The app is currently available as free download on Apple’s App store.
Nokia 114 Gets Urdu Support
Nokia has added Urdu user interface and urdu keypad to its entry level feature phone Nokia 114 and relaunched it in the market. The phone was first launched in January 2013.
Priced at Rs 2,579, Nokia 114 is a dual SIM phone which offers over 10 hours of talk time, 30 days of standby as per the company claims. It also features Nokia Xpress browser which claims to compress data by up to 90%.
New iBall Edu Slide Tablet
Low cost tablet maker iBall has partnered Bansal Classes to launch Edu-Slide tablet, targeting the IIT aspirants in the country, reports BGR.in. The tablet will be bundled with preloaded educational content for the IIT JEE entrance examination and board examinations for higher secondary students.
It will feature a 10.1-inch IPS HD display with resolution of 1280×1024 pixels, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, dual cameras including a an 8-megapixel rear camera and a VGA front camera, 8GB internal memory and a Micro SD Slot with support for up to 32GB memory cards. It will be available in two variants – A WiFi only variant at Rs 30,999 and a 3G+WiFi variant at Rs 35,999.
New eBay Technology Center
eBay Inc has launched a new global development center in Bangalore, reports Business Standard. This is the company’s second development center in India and 16th globally. In India, the company has a global development centre in Chennai and business unit in Mumbai.
In May 2012, eBay had stated plans to launch a Global Development Center in Bangalore and was planning to hire up to 1000 technologists over the next three years. The company told the publication that it has invested significantly into the development center, although it didn’t disclose any specific details.
