Tata Communications To Digitise Historical Documents In India: Report

Tata Communications Media Services plans to digitize documents of historical and cultural significance such as films and documentaries from the archives of Doordarshan and Films Division of India which go back to 1947 including speeches of India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and other leaders, reports The Hindu Business Line. Speaking to the publication, Sameer Kanse, Business Head, Tata Communications said that they plan to digitize and monetise these documents. However, it is not clear when they plan begin and complete this digitization process and how they plan to monetise. The report also states that Tata Communications has launched cloud-based broadcast quality video transcoding and delivery service to move content files to the cloud and transcoding them into broadcast quality formats for global delivery and transmission.  It further states that this service is already being used by Viacom18, JV of Viacom Inc and the Network18 Group to transcode and deliver HD Masters of its daily, Indian soap programs to its viewers in Pakistan. Other digitization initiatives aimed at saving Indian history Earlier this month, a collection of photographs depicting the Indian Army in the First World War called Girwood Collection that was held by the British Library in London has now been digitized and made available on Wikimedia Commons. Punjabi Sahitya Akademi Reference Lab has been digitizing 150 years old manuscripts since May 2012 and has scanned and saved around 1,000 manuscripts, stone-printed scripts, poetry books on computer hard discs and the digitized editions will be available across the globe through the internet.
