Is Uber Looking To Enter India?

uberU.S based online cab service, Uber is launching in India and has already listed three job openings for a community manager, a general manager and an operations &

logistics manager in Bangalore, reports NextBigWhat.

Uber offers cab services with four types of vehicles namely taxi, SUVs, black cars and Uberx. While taxis are charged at standard taxi meter rates, the company has a different pricing for the other types of cars used.

Consumers can presently book an Uber cab through their iPhone or Android app in some major cities of U.S, London, Toronto, Singapore, Rome, Sydney, Stockholm, among others at standard taxi meter rates along with $1 booking fee. The company has so far raised nearly $50 million to date with the most recent of $37 million round led by Menlo Ventures, according to a TechCrunch report.

It is also worth noting that Uber is facing regulatory issues and several law suits in the United States for launching its services without the permission of their transportation authorities. It might become hard for Uber to launch in India if the company plans to start its Indian services also without procuring the required permits especially since vehicles require state specific permits.

Stiff Competition In India?

Uber is also likely to enter a market which has several online cab booking services already plying in the country. However, with a player as big as Uber eyeing the Indian market makes us wonder if segment consolidation will follow their entry. Uber cabs’ USP of real-time cab booking is already being used in the Indian market with Ola cab launching its app last year.

Although Ola Cabs claimed to the first to launch a real-time taxi booking app in India, other players have also launched their app since Ola Cabs’ launch. Taxipixi has launched its real-time taxi booking app for Android and so has Gapps which aggregates availability of cabs from cab owners and relays to the customers for booking.

Savaari Car Rental Pvt Ltd offers an online rental service for chauffeur-driven cars, and had raised Rs 5 Crore in Series A funding from Inventus Capital Partners. YourCabs.com offers online aggregation of local cab rental services in Bangalore and had raised angel funding from Sprism Investment Pvt Ltd.

Taxiguide is another service which had raised Rs 25 lakh in angel funding from Anand R P and Getmecab.com also offers cab rentals in Delhi-NCR, Mumbai and Bangalore, and has tie-ups with around 25 car rental operators such as APEX, Global Travels, RBTS, KS Car Hire and RBS Tours and Travels.

In May 2012, Car rental company, Carzonrent India Pvt Ltd, which operates Radio Taxi services under the name Easy Cabs had also acquired the online car rental service aggregator, QCABS although the financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
