Mumbai-based E-Book marketplace Attano has launched a new service called ChapterBuy to sell individual chapters from reference books for higher education in an e-book format. At launch, the service seems to offer e-book versions of around 10,000 chapters from 900 e-books across three publishers including Pearson Education, Sheth Publishers, and Laxmi Publications, as indicated by a Times of India report. When we checked, we noticed that one can visit Attano's website and select a book of their preference with the ChapterBuy logo, to browse through various chapters in the book along with their pricing. One can then select any chapter of their choice from the book to buy. One can also later purchase the entire book, by just paying up the difference amount. The company informed that the pricing of each chapter varies upon the book and starts off at Rs 3 per chapter going up to Rs 1,146 per chapter. The chapters however are DRM-locked and can be only used on three devices simultaneously, as indicated by the report. It also apparently features Geo-IP protection, so that international users can't use editions meant for developing countries, since they relatively tend to be cheaper. The site currently offers various payment options like credit card, debit cards, net banking, cash cards and offline cheque payments to purchase books. Founded in 2009, Attano provides online textbooks for CBSE, ICSE, State board examinations, IIT-JEE, UPSC, CSAT, NTSE, CAT, AIEEE and others from 26 publishers and is funded by Helion Venture Partners. The company currently provides eBook readers across multiple platforms like Android, iPad, and Windows Desktops.…
