With the sixth edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) kicking off later today, micro-blogging site Twitter has partnered with the IPL Management to develop several applications and features, in a bid to provide an interactive experience for all the cricket fans. Here is what the company plans to do during the IPL tournament:
Discover Page: Twitter has setup a dedicated IPL events page at discover.twitter.com/IPL. At the time of writing this article, the page featured a Twitter list widget, showcasing all the tweets from a list curated by Twitter India.
It has also listed the Twitter accounts of all IPL related personalities, which includes Official IPL team accounts and their owners like Shah Rukh Khan (Kolkata Knight Riders), Preity Zinta (Kings XI Punjab), Vijay Mallya (Royal Challengers Bangalore), Shilpa Shetty (Rajasthan Royals) and Gurunath Meiyappan (Chennai Super Kings); Official accounts of IPL players divided by teams and finally the IPL Management team accounts like Rajiv Shukla and Sundar Raman and official accounts of IPL sponsors like Pepsi, Vodafone India and SET Max among others. Each of the Twitter accounts also has a ‘Follow’ button, allowing users to instantly follow their preferred Twitter accounts.
The company also says that the page will allow users to browse through tweets that include the hashtag #PepsiIPL, however, we weren’t able to find it at the time of writing this article.
Twitter Magic Mirror: Twitter said that it will also be using its Magic mirror application throughout the tournament, to allow cricketers and celebrities to tweet out pictures through the official @IPL account. Twitter had introduced Magic Mirror application during the Oscars earlier this year and the application was used to take pictures of celebrities present in the green room in a photo booth style, as indicated by an AP report (via Yahoo Movies).
IPL Website: There is a dedicated Twitter section on the official IPL website. This section currently features a real-time list of curated tweets from IPL team accounts and its players. It is also using dedicated team hashtags like #KKR, #CSK and #RCB to rank the IPL teams based on its popularity on Twitter. Besides this, it also has a text box which allows fans to select their preferred team and tweet about it. It also features a few time-based pre-filled tweets. For instance, the text box is currently allowing fans to tweet about scheduled celebrity performances in the opening ceremony tonight.
Besides this, there is a live tweet counter on the website, which calculates the number of IPL-related tweets sent on the Twitter platform. The company says that this counter will calculate all tweets related to the match or IPL 2013. Interestingly, the counter already shows around 7.5 million tweets at the time of writing this article.
Twitter also said that there will be a feature called “The Team Hashtag Battle” on the IPL website, which will allow fans to tweet about their favorite team and their respective hashtags, however its currently not clear as to how this feature works.
On Television: Twitter said that the Live Tweet counter and the Team Hashtag Battle feature will be included into the television production, with support of a real-time data stream and these features will be aired on the television screen during the live telecast of IPL cricket matches.
It looks Twitter will also be making a push for its recently launched mobile video service Vine, by saying that viewers will be encouraged to post vines on IPL 2013. Further, the company added that viewers will be encouraged to tweet about the cricket matches and the best tweets will be read out by on-air commentators.
Aircel Free Talktime Offer: On a related development, telecom operator Aircel has launched a new initiative called Extra Talk Time with CSK, which allows Aircel subscribers to opt for recharge of Rs 164, which will provide full talk time along with additional talk time whenever Chennai Super Kings (CSK) scores above 164. The company said that it will provide the difference between the runs scored by CSK and the MRP (Rs 164) as additional talk time to subscribers. That is, if CSK scores 180 runs, subscribers will get free talktime of Rs 16. Its however worth noting that these free talktime will be valid for 15 days.
