Around 1.09 million tablets units were shipped to the Indian market during October- December 2012, a minor dip from 1.1 million tablet shipments registered in July-September 2012, according to CyberMedia Research. For the year 2012, around 3.11 million units were shipped to the Indian market. Note that the research firm uses the term ‘shipments’ to describe the number of handsets leaving the factory premises for OEM sales or stocking by distributors and retailers; or in case of handsets imported into the country, it represents the number of handsets leaving the first warehouse. Shipments are not necessarily representative of demand, but more about the supply. MediaNama is not in a position to verify the accuracy of the findings. The report revealed that around 47 vendors shipped tablets in India during the quarter and a total 72 vendors shipped tablets in India for the year 2012. Micromax Leads 7-inch Tablet Segment: For the quarter, Micromax took the top spot in the country, accounting for 19.04% of the total shipments of tablets with sizes 7-inch and above, followed by Karbonn which accounted for 9.85% of the total shipments and Datawind which accounted for 9.64% of the total shipments. Note that Datawind numbers excludes the sales of Aakash tablets to Govt. of India.
