International Media Agencies Boycott India-Pakistan Series News Coverage

International news agencies have refused to cover the on going Pakistan Cricket tour of India in the light of the Board of Control For Cricket in India's (BCCI) decision to prohibit independent photographic news agencies like Getty Images, Action Images and Indian photographic agencies to report on the proceedings of the game, reports The News Media Coalition. News Media Coalition (NMC) members including Thomson Reuters, Agence France-Presse, Associated Press, the international photo agency Getty Images, the Press Association, the World Association of Newspapers (WAN-IFRA), and others have participated in the boycott. For the series, BCCI will make its own photographs available, which the BCCI hopes other agencies would use. However, following the decision, news outlets have decided that they would not file any text or photographic news in protest of the decision. This is not the first time that news agencies have blacked out a cricket series' updates. In November 2012, new agencies imposed a similar black out for the India-England series. Apart from that, BCCI had also restricted access to web publications for the Indian Premier League, typically in order to protect the rights of the digital rights holders. Implications: Websites typically unable to send journalists to cover these events, source photos and/or text from news and photo agencies, resulting in wider dissemination of content related to the Cricket series. With these restrictions put into place, it appears that web coverage of the series will be impacted adversely, although it will probably be worse if there is a boycott. - BCCI Restrictions…
