Reliance Industries Partners Spirit DSP To Offer VVoIP Services On 4G

Reliance Industries (RIL) has inked a deal with Moscow-based Spirit DSP to license Spirit's TeamSpirit Video and Voice engine to RIL subsidiary Infotel. While the deal period or the financial details of the deal remain undisclosed, Spirit stated that Reliance will be using its video and voice engine to provide Skype-like video and voice calling services (VVoIP) to its subscribers over its soon to be launched LTE network. Why this deal is interesting This deal becomes particularly interesting since there are no handsets or tablets available in the Indian market, which support Voice over LTE functionality over India's 4G network. However, it's worth noting that state-run BSNL had partnered with Sai InfoSystems in July 2011, to launch VVoIP services for its subscribers. Through this service, It was offering audio calls at 40 paise per minute and video calls at Rs.2/- per minute within India at a monthly rental of Rs 150. It was also offering International VoIP calling at Rs 1.20 per minute to the United States, China and landlines in the United Kingdom and Rs 7.20 per minute to mobile phones in the United Kingdom. But all in all there's no large scale VoIP service in the country. Also, according to the recently passed telecom policy, operators are allowed to offer voice services through 4G or BWA whenever an appropriate regulatory framework for progressive liberalisation of spectrum utilisation is established in the country.
