Plivo, a voice and messaging app platform, has raised $1.75 million in seed funding from Andreessen Horowitz, Battery Ventures, Qualcomm Incorporated and SV Angel. The funds raised will be used to expand its sales and marketing, according to the company. The current team size of the startup is 17, however, the company plans to increase the count to 20 by this December end. Plivo, launched in December 2011, provides a voice and messaging platform with APIs and 24*7 support that web developers can integrate into their web app. It enables enterprises, service providers and web developers to deploy voice and SMS based applications into website or telephony endpoint including fixed or mobile connections. Its customers can bring their own carrier service or use Plivo’s; they also offer local phone numbers in 50 countries. It also plans to expand its platform beyond voice and messaging into areas such as video and WebRTC. WebRTC is an API definition drafted by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) that will enable applications such as voice calling, video chat and P2P file sharing without plugins. In July 2012, Plivo had raised $1.67 million from Y Combinator, a startup accelerator in the US, and its partners. Apart from that, Plivo had also received $10,000 from The Morpheus, a startup accelerator, and a $250,000 fund post-completion from Morpheus’ investor partners including Seeders Venture Capital Pvt Ltd and One97 Mobility Fund.
