Around 1,630 people were arrested for cyber crimes registered under the Information Technology Act, 2000 and under sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC) in the year 2011, reports PTI (via The Economic Times). This announcement was made by Milind Deora, Minister of State for Communications & IT, in a written reply to Rajya Sabha. While we weren't able to locate any relevant reply on the Rajya Sabha website, these arrests are a significant increase from 799 arrests in 2010, 288 arrests in 2009, 178 arrests in 2008 and 154 arrests in 2007. Arrests: Deora stated that 1,184 persons were arrested for cyber crimes registered under IT Act, 2000 in the year 2011, a significant increase from 799 arrests in 2010 and 288 arrests in 2009. Citing the data from National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), the minister added that 446 people were arrested in the year 2011 for cyber crimes registered under sections of IPC related to cyber crimes, a marginal increase from 394 arrests in 2010 and 263 arrests in 2009. Cyber Crime cases: 1,791 cyber crime cases were registered under the IT Act, 2000 for the year 2011, as per data from the NCRB. This is a significant increase from 966 registered cases in 2010, 420 in 2009, and 288 cases in 2008. 422 cyber crime cases were reported under sections of IPC for the year 2011, up from 356 cases registered in 2010, 276 in 2009 and 176 registered cases in the year 2008, as indicated by the report.
