Microsoft Launches Windows 8; Starts At Rs.1,999 For Existing Windows Users


Microsoft has launched its new operating system – Windows 8 worldwide, including in the Indian market. Customers can buy and download the new operating system starting today.

The Windows 8 OS will come with the Windows App store, an app marketplace for Windows 8. The company claims that it sees around 700 apps added to it each day. Apps such as Bharat Matrimony, BigFlix, BookMyShow, Bookyourtable, Burrp, Dhingana, Fastrack Tees, Flyte MP3, Gaana, Goibibo, Hindustan Times, ICICI Bank iMobile, ICICIDirect, JustEat, MakeMyTrip Explore, MapmyIndia, my airtel, NDTV Play, PVR Cinemas, Tarla Dalal, The Times of India, Yahoo Cricket, Zovi, among others are already available in the Windows App Store for Download. Apart from that, Microsoft has also launched Xbox music and videos for Windows 8, a streaming service with library of 30m songs. It also features a new Internet Explorer 10 optimized for touch, and built-in cloud capabilities with SkyDrive.

Versions:  Windows 8 will be available in four versions — of which Windows 8, Windows 8 Pro will be available through the retail channel, Windows 8 Enterprise for large organizations and Windows RT — designed for ARM-based tablets are available pre-installed on new devices. The key features available exclusively to Windows 8 Enterprise customers are: Windows To Go, DirectAccess, BranchCache, AppLocker, VDI Enhancements and New Windows 8 App Deployment.

Pricing: Customers who bought a PC between June 2, 2012 and January 31, 2013 can upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8 Pro for Rs. 699. Apart from that, Windows XP and Windows 7 users can update their OS by downloading the OS for Rs. 1,999. Customers will also be able to purchase Windows 8 is physical format (DVD).

Requirements: To upgrade to Windows 8, users need to make sure that their PCs come with 1GHz or faster processor with support for PAE, NX, and SSE2, 1GB RAM for 32-bit or 2 GB  for 64-bit, minimum of 16 GB HDD space for 32-bit or 20 GB for 64-bit, and support for Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver.

OEMS: Microsoft has partnered with 14 OEMs in India to launch Windows 8 PCs and tablets. Sony, Toshiba, HP, Dell, Asus, Wipro, Acer, Samsung, Lenovo, HCL, Zenith Computers,  RP Infosystems, Sai Info System, and Fijitsu are among the OEM partners that would bring Windows 8 PCs and tablets in different form factors in India.
