Update: Cyber Media Research has shared with MediaNama more details on the number of 3G handsets and Multi SIM handsets shipped in India. For the first half of 2012, about 10.8 million 3G handsets were shipped and accounting to 10.6% marketshare of total handsets sold, up from 7.7 million handsets shipped in first half of 2011. As for Multi SIM handsets, about 70.7 million multi-SIM handsets were shipped during the first half of 2012, accounting to 69.1% marketshare of total handsets shipped. During the first half of 2011, multi-SIM handsets accounted for 47.5% marketshare of the total handsets shipped. Original Post: October 29, 2012 Around 102.43 million mobile phones were shipped into the Indian market for the period January – June 2012, which also includes 5.50 million smartphones, as reported by Cyber Media Research. This is substantially more than the number of handsets sold last year. Last year Cyber Media Research reported 183 million mobile phone shipments for the entire year. Note that the research firm uses the term ‘shipments’ to describe the number of handsets leaving the factory premises for OEM sales or stocking by distributors and retailers; or in case of handsets imported into the country, it represents the number of handsets leaving the first warehouse.
