Indian Mobile Handset Shipments At 183M During 2011: Report

Around 183 million mobile phones were shipped into the Indian market for the period January – December 2011, which also includes 11.2 million smartphones, which witnessed a growth of 87%, according to a report by Cyber Media Research.  Note that the research firm uses the term ‘shipments’ to describe the number of handsets leaving the factory premises for OEM sales or stocking by distributors and retailers; or in case of  handsets imported into the country, it represents the number of handsets leaving the first warehouse. MediaNama does not endorse the report and is not able to verify the accuracy of the findings. For Jan-Dec 2011 - Overall shipments: In the overall India mobile handsets market, Nokia retained leadership position with 31% share, followed by Samsung with 15% and Micromax with 5%, in terms of sales (unit shipments) during 2011. - Smartphone shipments: In terms of Smartphone shipments, in the entire year, Nokia was the biggest player with a share of 38%, followed by Samsung with 28% market share and RIM (BlackBerry) with 15%. According to the report, the share of Android smartphones increased from 9% to 34% year over year, in the smartphone segment in India. - 3G phones: The report mentions that around 18 million 3G enabled phones were shipped during the same period, a year-on-year growth of 153%. Again, Nokia was the biggest player with a share of 52%, followed by Samsung with 27% market share and RIM (BlackBerry) with 6% share in the segment. - Multi-SIM phones: 57% handsets out of the total, were multi-SIM…
