Even as the number of active subscribers in India’s large telecom market went up to 635.4 million in November 2011, up from 626.1 million at the end of October 2011, according to a report from the Indian telecom regulator TRAI, Tata Teleservices has reported a decline of around 4.45 million in its connection base. Thus the growth in the total connection base was only 2.9 million, pulled down by the decline in Tata Tele’s base. Does this, perhaps, indicate a shift from CDMA to GSM operators, or does it mean that there has been a shift from Tata Tele to others? The GSM connection base (sans Tata Tele and RCOM) was, as reported by the GSM association COAI, up by 6.67 million.

On the broadband front, the growth is slow as ever: India witnessed a growth of 1.21% in its broadband connection base, taking the total number of broadband connections to 13.13 million in November 2011 from 12.98 million in October.
