GetIt Infoservices, the Delhi based classifieds business, has launched a deals service website GetIt Hot Deals offering deals from partners across various categories. It has also extended the service on its voice platform CallGetit, where users can look for deals in their location by calling 4444-4444. Deals include discounts on restaurants, spas, car servicing, household goods, holiday packages, computers, furniture and others. The deals service will also be integrated with Getit’s other products: the online directory service Getit.in and classifieds site Freeads.in, where it will feature relevant deals along with the regular listings.
Classifieds/Directory Sites Getting Into Deals: So after Online Travel Agents, the latest to join the deals bandwagon are classifieds services. A few months back, online classifieds service Sulekha.com had launched its own deals site, Sulekha BestBuy. MediaNama readers will also recall that online directory service JustDial in it’s IPO documents has also indicated that it plans to launch a “Daily Deals” section on its website, leveraging its user base and relationship with SMEs to offer deals and special promotions on products and services. So we all know, who’s next.
No Group Buying? : The site does not seem to follow a group buying model, and deals do not indicate details like number of people who’ve availed the deal before the deal becomes valid or deal expiration details. Although it’s possible that the the participating merchants set an internal target, after which the deal might be terminated. Also, users don’t need to buy deal coupons online, and the deal coupon can be sent to an e-mail id or to a mobile number, online. Deals can be shared on social networks.
Non-Metro deals: Although the site lists a large number of locations including all tier-2 and 3 cities, a lot of them do not feature any deals. For instance there were no deals available in Ahmedabad, Indore and Kanpur. However, the site did offer deals when we selected Jaipur and Secundrabad. The maximum number of deals are available in Getit’s home turf, Delhi/NCR. GetIt can offer more local deals since it already has a database of merchants in its directory service.
Advantage over other deals players: As we’ve always said, with the deals space getting a new player every few weeks, it’s becoming even more challenging for them to differentiate their offerings and feature quality deals. Getit would have an advantage over others since it has access to a vast merchant database and could also sign up new directory enrollments for the deals program. It’s relatively easier to get partners on board.
Buying deals VS offering free deals: Perhaps Getit is more confident in offering free deals than implementing a buy a deal online model. One of the reasons could be a market study which could have indicated that Indian users are more likely to go for deals where they don’t have to pay a certain amount in advance, without actually visiting an establishment. We feel that Indians are a little skeptical of buying a deal for a lesser known eating joint or beauty salon before they visit it. Also, even after downloading the deal, the user is not bound to avail it. So this model offers more flexibility. Monetization would still be based on referrals or on a commission model.
