MTNL Collaborates With Bharat Berry to Launch Push-Mail Service

Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL), the public sector telecom service provider, which offers services in Delhi and Mumbai, has partnered with Bharat Berry to provide push mail and Personal Information Management services (calendar and contacts sync) to its mobile phone subscribers in the National Capital Region. Note that the service is not exclusive to MTNL, and the tie-up enables operator billing for the service on its network. It can run on any Java-enabled, GPRS-enabled handset including Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, LG, BlackBerry, HTC and others. While individual e-mail and PIM services are priced at Rs 50 each per month, a combo subscription pack for both the services is also being offered at Rs 80, per month, according to Telecom Talk. Bharat Berry's website says that the service is available as a free trial for customers for a three month period.We do not know if it applies to MTNL subscribers, as well. MTNL also offers BlackBerry services on its 2G and 3G networks. Offered by Jaipur based IT and ISP company, Data Infosys Limited, Bharat Berry was launched in October 2010, in order to offer a push mail service that complies to Indian interception laws, according to the company. Using this service, users can receive push alerts for e-mails, and over-the-air synchronisation for calendar and contacts a.k.a BlackBerry and Nokia Push Mail services.  Note that there have been media reports about India’s Home Ministry asking the Department of Telecom to bar "mobile phone companies" (presumably, telecom operators) from launching Nokia’s Push mail.
