Film director Shekhar Kapur, and music composer AR Rahman are joining forces to launch a New Media venture, MediaNama has learned from reliable sources. While details are sketchy at present (help us out), we’re told that the company is, expectedly, going to focus on digital content creation in the media and entertainment domain for distribution across digital platforms – particularly the Internet and Mobile. The content will specifically target the Indian diaspora.
The company, christened Shekhar Kapur Digital Media, will operate out of Bengaluru, and has as its Chief Executive Officer, Poonacha Machaiah, according to his LinkedIn profile. Machaiah was previously the Chairman and CEO of ABOVE Solutions Inc; in June this year, Kapur had joined the Board of Advisors of this company. What’s particularly interesting about them, is that they developed TangoFX, a digital video consumption platform agnostic to mode of delivery and device. We’re not sure if that has anything to do with Shekhar Kapur Digital Media, though.
A digital content business targeting the Indian diaspora is not new to Kapur, who was one of founders of Virgin Comics (now Liquid Comics), alongwith Richard Branson and Deepak Chopra. In 2008, Virgin Comics, which was looking to create characters and content based on Indian themes for exploitation across print, gaming, television, films and mobile comics, was restructured.
