Airtel announced the launch of the Airtel World Sim targetted at users travelling abroad. The SIM would enable users to retain the same number irrespective of the country they travel to. The concept, though not new with international players such as One Sim and Telestial already around, is a first for the Indian market. What's also different is that the service is prepaid as opposed to existing services by Matrix Cellular Services', which are postpaid, and users will be able to forward calls to their Airtel number to their Airtel World number. Also, given that it is prepaid, Airtel is allowing users to recharge online, using their credit card, here. The service has been powered for Airtel by Canaan Partners funded mobile VAS company mCarbon. Subscribers of the Airtel World Sim would be able to retain the same number in 190 countries, recharge online and as per Airtel's claims would save upto 85% on international calls. The service however would be available only to Delhi customers for now, with the rest of the country having to wait a little longer. The tariff for the Airtel World Sim is detailed here.
