BBC Plans Online Platform & Channels For India; Eyes Mobile

Chris Dobson, BBC Worldwide’s executive vice-president has said that, BBC is looking at creating new TV channels and launching an online platform with “content relevant for the region”. He sees “tremendous opportunity” in the mobile space with soon to start 3G services  and complementing high-end devices which will enhance the experience of the online content.  (Read more atlivemint.com)

Uninor Launches Service In Orissa

Uninor anounced the launch of its GSM service in Orissa. The telcom operator now has a presence in 8 out of the 22 circles it has UAS license for. Uninor has launched its service in the state with two tariff plans, a base plan called talklonger@29p and a subscription plan called callmore@29p. The company launched services in 7 circles simultaneously earlier this month as part of their launch in India.

Google Improves Transliteration Tool

Google has introduced an improved version of its transliteration tool. The new version supporst 17 new languages, 12 of which are Indian and comes with an integrated dictionary. The tool now supports Arabic, Bengali, Greek, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Nepali, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Sanskrit, Serbian, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu but Google transliteration IME still offers only 14 languages.

Learn English Programme Through BSNL Mobile Phones

BSNLhas come up with an innovative way to teach English through mobile phones. To subscribe to the Learn English programme BSNL mobile phone users have to dial 125537. The service will cost Rs 20 per month and browsing charge of Rs 0.30 per minute and is offered in nine different Indian languages. (Read more at Deccan Herald)

Sun TV has announced that it will restructure its distribution business to focus at penetration of the network’s channels in India and internationally via  DTH, IPTV, HITS and MMDS platforms. Two distribution verticals will be created; one will concentrate on south India operations and international business and the other on expanding Sun TV into north, west and east markets of India.

Digicable Signs IT Outsourcing Agreement With IBM

IBM has announced that Digicable, a cable and broadband distributor in Indiaibmlogohas signed a $83 million, 10 year outsourcing agreement with them. As part of the agreement, IBM will provide IT infrastructure services, network support, application maintenance services and security services.

Tata Teleservices Brings Cloud Computing For Mobile Broadband Devices

Tata Teleservices has announced the launch of Nova Navigator for  Photon Pro and Photon Plus users in India. The service is powered by Novatium and will focus on internet, gaming, digital entertainment, online education, telephony and business productivity. According to Tata Teleservices the service will be managed through a central server and users will get free of cost ‘on air’ upgrades from anywhere across the world. It will also support 3G.
