logo-smsgupshupSMS based social messaging company SMS GupShup intends to focus on increasing usage of its web and WAP sites. The company is also considering enabling web-only comments, apart from making their Web and WAP properties more usable and user friendly. So far, mainly SMS GupShup publishers tend to use Web and WAP, while most users receive content through SMS, Beerud Sheth, CEO of SMS GupShup told MediaNama. “We code-name our releases by movie stars, and this is the ‘Deepika’ release,” he added.

Among the initiatives planned is the introduction of realtime search in 2-3 weeks. Realtime Search allows users to search for keywords and updates, as the name suggests, immediately after the content is put up, unlike web search which takes time to index the content. Realtime search is used for trending topics, as well as views related to the latest news updates. For example, you can follow a live conversation corresponding to a Cricket match or a F1 race in progress.

But does this means a switch from SMS to the Web for GupShup? Sheth said that it’s not a situation of either-or. “The best tool for consuming on the web is through search, but we also have to solve the discovery problem on SMS. Search hasn’t worked on SMS – even Google search on SMS has not taken off. I don’t think many people use it. But, there are other ways to discover – if people have subscribed to one group, then we also cross-promote through footer messages. Search makes sense on the Web, and referrals make sense on SMS.”
