June 09: 12.03M Wireless Connections Added; Broadband At 6.62M

The Indian telecom sector added 12.03 million wireless connections in June compared to the 11.59 million added in May. The total number of telephone connections in India rose 2.63% to 464.82 million as of end June, 2009. Teledensity rose from 2.73% in May to reach 39.86% in June. Wireless teledensity is now 36.64% Total wireless connections is 427.28 million Wireline teledensity is 3.22% Broadband connections grew 3.4% to 6.62 million. This is an increase of 21.4% from December 31, 2008. Operator-wise Additions Vodafone Essar - 2.36 million, total connections as of June 09 - 76.45 million Loop Mobile - added 48, 778 million, total 2.3 million Idea Cellular - added 1.5 million, total 42.76 million; Spice - added 85,039, total 4.3 million Bharti Airtel - added 2.81 million, total 102.36 million Reliance - added 2.39 million, total 79.6 million MTS (Sistema Shyam) - added 0.25 million, total 1.19 million Tata Indicom - added 0.62 million, total 37.1 million Aircel - added 1.1 million, total 21.79 million MTNL - added 37,583 connections, total 4.6 million BSNL - added 0.76 million, total 54.36 million Growth In C-Class Cities Up 70% YoY The number of wireless connections in C circle cities grew 3.9% in June compared to the national average of 2.9% and a growth of 2% in metros, reflecting the fact that Tier-3 cities are still under-served.
