Its a tall claim. Twitter is not as popular as made out to be. Besides, its use will be topical.

good start, though we have quite a way to go... http://www.exchange4media.com/e4m/news/fullstory.asp?section_id=5&news_id=33359&tag=28311&pict=2
meanwhile, this survey we did a few days back http://socialtoo.com/survey/view/369 told us that only 2 out of 25 people had a problem with links.. that may be a small sample, but interesting nevertheless...

SP:

Twitter, like Blogs and the Internet in general, has some sources of authenticated information, and others that are not.

I should point out that Sachin Kalbag (http://twitter.com/sachinkalbag) , digital editor of Mail Today (a newspaper) was Tweeting live from Nariman House, and reported confirmed information.

At the time the (non-existent) CST blasts/attacks were being reported on TV, many of us made an effort on Twitter to check for efficacy of the information, and informed others of inaccurate information when someone started a rumour.

The BBC should not have reported unconfirmed news from twitter -- rather, used the input as a starting point, confirmed and then reported.

It's not about Twitter as a medium being inaccurate, but more about some users being reliable, others not.

That's the way every publishing medium pans out.

Indian Media seems to be chasing a lost-game? No authenticity to Twitter feeds - admits BBC.

Monetization is largely not a factor at all in being on places like Twitter for media publications. As you said, there maybe indirect monetization, but that is largely negligible.

The reason for the automated tweets is often the high opportunity cost publications have to incur in having an actual human being man the post updating the tweets and responses.

Why it is important is is because these days you have to be at points of presence that help in acquiring new users at costs lower than what SEM or other paid means can get you.

Escape velocity for new products is factor of expanding the repeat user base, which depends on converting new users from all such avenues.

All the twitters and facebooks help a bit in that direction, but in terms of engagement, it is very much a nascent medium. Everyone is poking around to see what gives.

the third approach is an interesting concept in that it allows readers to follow one particular topic in detail, although creating a new twitter id each time doesn't seem v practical or the most efficient solution. perhaps a middle path would be the #keyword sort of approach used by the mumbai twitterati during the recent terror attacks, which makes search easier.
